HP TouchPad Tethers to Palm Pre Minus… and Answers Its Phone Calls [VIDEO]

By: , 6/28/2011 1:22 pm | 25 comments

We’re getting tips on TouchPad videos left and right (thanks, guys!), and we’re doing our best to bring you new information as it comes our way. Previously, we showed you cwhead321′s video unboxing the TouchPad at WalMart. This next YouTube video is ten minutes of TouchPad goodness while he plays with the device.

There were two headliners in this video for us:

  • (00:00:52) He was able to tether the TouchPad to his Pre Minus (not a big surprise, though there were questions about this from our readers)
  • (00:01:10) He reports being able to answer phone calls from his Palm Pre Minus running 1.4.5 on the TouchPad after pairing it via Bluetooth, though forwarding texts was unsuccessful. It’s not shown on the video itself, but we’ve been getting similar reports that it works. It also jives with our earlier hope that this would be possible, since the TouchPad uses compatible Bluetooth standards.

I knew this would work with the pre-! Only a matter of time before texts are hacked to worked.

      Fixed. Thanks!

I think this is the best idea for killing the sim slot, I dont want to pay for a contract or put my sim, I just want my phone to be tethered all the time with data, voice and sms and with touch to share this just makes so much sense and it feels weird that neither does the ipad or honeycumb do that, another win for webos!!

    • Kallisti

The problem is just battery.. I’m not sure I want to be running freetether all the time!

    Great news

Awesome! Glad that I will be able to answer calls from my Pre2 on a TouchPad. Here’s to hoping that text forward works on my Pre2 as well!

Dang, I think that zipping off text messages through the TP to my Pre+ would be more useful than the call answering. But, as another comment mentioned, hopefully the webOS community will get it to work :) Otherwise, no biggie. I have an upgrade available in November.

Glad I preordered mine and looking forward to receiving it.

just remember: these are demo units, and according to the HP rep at the Best Buy where I was playing with one saturday, are not fully featured.

For example, I paired the touchpad with my frankenpre plus running 2.1.0 and was able to make a call dialing from the touchpad.  But luna crashed when I hung up.  The text forwarding wasnt working either, but the HP rep didn’t think it would to start off with.

“Device info” claimed that it was running 3.0.0 Build 16, and as I’m sure many have seen, Dev mode is password protected on the demo units…

  • YeaSayer

Do they have the App Catalog on the demo units? I’d love to see that

No App Cat access as there was not a “real” Profile associated with the device

i wonder why i keep checking my pre for messages?

    surprising ending..

mm, ran out of battery. how unfortunately predictably palm…

Pairs with Pre Minus means that it will likely be able to pair with any bluetooth compatible cell phone. Great argument for augmenting any of your cellular devices with a TouchPad.

(extra post to emphasize that i was kidding with the above post).  super stoked about the touchpad release.  will go well with my veer.  not sure if i’ll wait until the white one is released (hoping that the bezel around the white one is indeed white).

      • Danar

Best Buy in Mankato MN has white Veer on display.

I just did this today at the local Best Buy. What I found interesting is that the TouchPad was named “Palm Device”.

The walmart people seem uninformed but nice at least. They were very patient with this webOS enthusiast fellow.
