Richard Kerris Talks Tablets on Fox [Video]

By: , 6/24/2011 11:12 pm | 41 comments

One of our favorite people on the planet Richard Kerris visited Fox Business News channel today to talk about his favorite tablet and what makes it so awesome. (Which tablet is it? The suspense is unreal… so many twists and turns. It was kinda like reading a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure.)

In this video Mr. Kerris delves into how webOS is nicely positioned between the “walled garden” that is iOS and the “wild west” that is Android. He touches lightly on Synergy and other redeeming qualities of the OS.

See for yourself.

flattr this!

I really, really, really like this interview. I can’t say that enough.

I’m very surprised about the comments about Honeycomb. Nice to see some jabs, event if they come from velveteen gloves.

  • Dude

From his twitter avatar, I expected him to look much different…

They appear to be making a really big push, and they have the dollars to sustain it. Palm didn’t. We saw a short flurry with Palm, then the news and ads kind of died down (or went the creepy lady route). If HP sustains this type of stuff, hitting the news, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, magazines, commercials, et al, they will succeed. The only question in my mind is just how much they succeed. Fourth place? Third place? Very good possibility if they play their cards right and keep the new devices flowing and updates coming. Cracking 1st or 2nd will require them really establishing themselves and will be very hard, but who thought Android would rise to the top when we were looking at them 2 years ago?

    • Dude

They not only need to sustain the advertising, they need to sustain devices. So far, they’ve had a regular release schedule: Veer middle of May, Touchpad in early July, Pre 3 in late July/August. The rumors are that they’ll release a 7″ tablet after, probably in late August or September. That leaves October, November, and December for two other devices, since they said they will release six this year.

If they can keep up this regular schedule, they won’t fade out of consumer mindshare like the Pre did with six months between upgrades/moving to different carriers.

I’ve been telling my buds that webOS is like a diesel freight train. Slow to start but it can’t be stopped. Soon it will get up to speed and before you know it you will be surrounded by it. Phones, tablets, PCs, printers… In a year or so you will have webOS in one form or another whether you want it or not.

Is there any reason RIM can’t succeed? The OS is very similar and development may have come up short of a polished product but it is outpacing HP timelines. Hp is just not going to sell a lot of these to consumers initially until they have consumer apps like netflix, mlb or xm.

      • Melvin Hunter

Beyond the user interface, the two operating systems aren’t very similar at all. Neither are the development tools.

      • eid

Wallstreet is abandoning RIM (last week their share prices plunged by 23%) , they’re laying off people, their co-ceos may be ousted.  RIM depends on their smartphones (HP does not) entirely and their marketshare and mindshare is plunging.  And RIM’s 3rd party developer efforts and tools are in worse shape than HP WebOS.
On another note, this was a great interview.  In 3 minutes, he hit the highlights and put webOS in perspective compared to iOS and Android.  Excellent explanation!

Have you used their new OS? How about the playbook? No way RIM makes it.

I really like this guy. I have heard bundles of great comments about him from devs. I really what to see more of him in interviews. He should have presented in the Feb 9th event. If you are reading this Richard Kerris, I want to say thank you for your great and hard work. I am slowly learning how to develop for WebOS and am probably going to be submitting my request for the Early Access here soon and I can’t wait to interact with you and your team. Thanks for the support of the homebrew community, it really means alot to us… really, and I can’t wait to start developing my app for the app catalog!

    • Dude

Meh, I think he just says what developers like to hear. Really, the one good thing I can associate with him is the Pivot.

That was a good interview. I definitely loved the jab at Honeycomb and how he said that they support the Homebrew developers.

  • Tyler Bayne

Side note: Anyone else notice the interviewer seemed like he only talked in caps lock?

That’s FOX Business for ya. Makes watching their channel almost unbearable.

      • Dude

Same thing in the other business channels, except possibly Bloomberg.

      • JDM

That’s Fox News for you, period… Fear, Fear, FEAR! Alert , Fear, ALERT!! Be scared! DANGER!!!!

  • Louisoneal

WOW!  That was very very very very very nice interview!  I mean what else can you ask for from a spokesperson for HP.

The man personally contacted me and got me a Pre 2 when my main line Pre- finally fell apart (literally). I have one free app, no worries if I was even working on others, he had no reason to even worry about my phone situation. I tweeted about my phone, he saw it and contacted me. The guy is a class act and a great front-man for webOS, hope to see him pushed to the front more often. Great interview.

Same thing with me. He DM on twitter and he gave me his HP email.I have a pre+ and although it really has started to fall apart on me, I didn’t want to ask for a new device when the Pre3 is almost coming out. No point of wasting his time, I know he has a lot to do – his act of kindness was enough for me. This guy really is a class act. HP Palm’s Developer Relations team really is the differentiating factor of why I stay with webOS.

      • Dude

I contacted him on Twitter and not a peep from him back.

Am I the only one who can’t see the video?  Damn Fox must hate me…. or is it the other way around?  (Nah just mutual)

    • Danar

I can’t see it either. Is it embedded?

      • http://profiles.google.com/david83151 David B

OK i can’t get it to work on FF, but chrome worked.

Bah, the TouchPad was out of the camera view while he was flipping cards. I’ve been on television some and have learned to look at the camera monitors any time I am showing any props. No worries, it was more the camera guy’s fault. But Mr. Kerris did a great job and will have more TV appearances, I’m sure.

    • http://twitter.com/KingNoso11 Oscar Reynoso

Yea, they could have shown the TouchPad in action a little more.

I’m in the WOR app, I see no video/link :-(

  • RB

Click the internet icon at top right (globe icon) to view web page with embedded video…

Tappng the Globe icon in top rght corner of WOR app brings me to a moble view of this same article, and still the video can’t be seen. At least on my Sprint Pre-.

      • Danar

        Ditto on my pre+

balance is the key of success.

Seems odd that he didn’t talk about or even demo the Touch to share function with a Veer phone. Also, I don’t think I heard the word Enterprise in the interview. That’s what this tablet is all about. Otherwise a good interview. I like that he took the competition on.

    • Anonymous

It’s a three minute interview on a business channel– He covered what was really important for the target audience, which was the comparison with the competition.
