Kindle Finally Available (for some) TouchPad Owners!

By: , 7/18/2011 8:01 pm | 40 comments

We just received several tips from happy TouchPad owners who have finally been able to download the highly anticipated Kindle app. This comes hot on the heels of the promised “hard launch” that took place yesterday. Unfortunately, it seems that it’s only available in the U.S. at the moment as we are getting several angry folks from Europe letting us know they do not yet have the app. We have not yet had the chance to play with it, but all of our readers can expect a full review as soon as we get our grubby paws on this thing. In the mean time feel free to let us know in the comments what your experience with the app is thus far.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

flattr this!

Ahh, hush up. You guys will get the Pre3 way before we do here in the states so quit yer yippen.

    • Greg M

Do you have info to back that up?

  • tech_giant

Very solid implementation.I’ll let everyone else point out the blemishes. I hope that this counts as validation for the  senior editor’s ultimatum on some level.

I hope they bring page animations in the next update. I think they demonstrated those at the Feb. 9th Think Beyond event.

    • fango

go to settings n turn off basic animation

      • Tyler Bayne

Oh thanks! I was hoping it was like the iPad’s book reader where the page animation starts right when you press your finger down and kind of follows it but I guess this doesn’t. :(

Very nice work.  A bit late but HP is delivering if belatedly. I think my Kindle is going to be neglected for a while.

    • JDM

LATE?!! I haven’t even purchased a Touchpad yet, and I belong to the 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999991 percent of the population who doesn’t have The WebOS 3.0.

So, you’re reading a book and you want to go back to the library and you do what? Close the app and restart it?

Also, portrait orientation simply doesn’t work. Rendering is just screwed up.

I have only tried with one book (a dictionary actually) but there’s something not quite right.

Hold a finger in the middle of the screen.  Press the icon in the upper left hand corner once navigation information pops up.  Yeah, not the most intuitive at first, but easy to use after the first time.

      • Gary3799

thanks for the tip…I thought it was a pause sign for audio, but guess the icon is supposed to look like books on a shelf.

It’s a great start and i’m looking for fixes of bugs (8 copies of same book, no video in Vooks, etc) I’ve already found.  Either way, it works and love having 40+ new things to read and downloaded for free.  Very Cool!  Sorli…

    • JDM

Well, now we can’t ever blame HP for not putting out new things for WebOS.  New things are better than no things, right?

No blame and sorry if my comments came across that way.  Actually, I’ve already fixed my quad drupple copies of books initially downloaded by simply uninstalling  the Kindle app and reinstalling.  Everything came back, archived redownloaded, and now no duplicates.   Sometimes trial and error works.

Hoping video is also fixed, but that may take another update from HP.  Either way, Kindle rocks and I’m very excited about this and future updates. Sorli…

Oh, I didn’t see it that way :) I think it’s a positive thing that they are putting new things out.

  • Kallisti

I got it and it is working. Downloaded a free book (sample page) to see how it look & to be familiar with Kindle. I like it so far.

  • Wmmc2001us

got it, updated on my wifes kindle acct… She is pixxxxxxed cuz I can read all the books she paid for at no cost to me!

So I got her a $50 amazon gift card….. To keep her happy and away from my Touchpad. (She is dying to use my kindle app vs. Her kindle).  This could cost me big bucks for TOUCHPAD #2…

I got it last night and it didn’t work at all.  All of the books were ‘corrupted’ even though I just sync’d them from Amazon. Every book I try to open gave the same error message.  “Book Reader
Failure. This book has been corrupted. Please archive and download the
book again.” I archived and reloaded the books and had the same issue.  I was not impressed.

I fixed it by uninstalling, rebooting and re-installing the app.  Then everything worked fine.  But still, it was annoying.

    • LisaM

Thanks for this info…was going crazy, this helped solve a big problem.

  • Rob Cushing

Works fine. Finally, some new app juice for the TP. Bring it on. I can handle it.

Some above say working in UK & some say not? Who is right?

Still holding off on TouchPad till Kindle, ‘movie viewing’ app (great if HP MovieStore works or else locally, a LoveFilm tie-up would be nice!) & document editing available to make it worth using.
