Have a broken TouchPad? iFixit HP TouchPad Repair Manual comes to the rescue

By: , 8/23/2011 2:32 pm | 18 comments

Hopefully you maxed out your credit cards to grab a handful of TouchPads for your friends and family during The Great TouchPad Firesale this past weekend. Once they’re delivered and in their hot little hands, everyone’s going to forget that other tablet even existed, right? So what happens when your beloved TouchPad gets a little ragged around the edges? Since a TouchPad 2 is out of the question for the moment, those brave enough to crack the thing open to do their own repairs now have a place to go for help.

The folks over at iFixit have put together an HP TouchPad Repair Manual chock full of various repairs that can be done to replace various parts including the battery, camera, headphone jack, antenna, and more. Each guide is beautifully detailed with high quality photos for each step in the process. Also included are the tools recommended for each job, along with downloadable PDF’s to take on the go. Visitors can also ask questions, or add their own notes to a guide for future visitors to see.

There is also an iFxit app in the HP App Catalog (Free) that contains guides for all kinds of repairs, from cameras to blenders, to PC’s and game consoles. Unfortunately, we were unable to find the TouchPad guides in the app itself, but we hope the folks at iFixit will add it in the near future.

Warning: The TouchPad comes with a 1 year warranty courtesy of HP when purchased (yes it’s still fully supported), so we wouldn’t suggest cracking the thing open right away. But if you’re adventerous enough to dive into its innards a year from now, iFixit has you covered.

One good thing about the fire sale is sold out touchpads,  one bad thing about the fire sale is  sold out touchpads  so there will be none available if needed as a replacement!

Good news. One for the pre+ would be nice too because I plan on having it for quite sometime.

Still holding out hope for a new Pre 3. Dropped my pre2 a few weeks ago. Might need a fix kit for my Pre. Side note: the new Espn phone app is great!

Interesting. I noticed you said this 26 minutes before a 5.9 earthquake struck NYC.

Really thinking about getting that Pre³ from UK Palm site for €299 which is what? $520? Does anyone know if AT&T will activate for me? I asked an at&t rep and they didn’t know :(

webOS. The operating system and hardware that comes with flaws you can count on being an Homebrew and iFixit hobbyist. Nice, if you want to be a hobbyist.
