From The Grapevine: The Future of webOS Smart Phones?

By: , 8/11/2011 11:24 am | 137 comments

It is almost mid August, 2011 and webOS enthusiasts are still finding themselves longing for any sign of a new webOS phone… on any network.

Yes, we have the mighty Veer, a phone we happen to enjoy very much, but a Veer alone will not satisfy the needs of the average smartphone enthusiast. The webOS community is small and mighty, but we also have the need to flaunt and brag about a phone with hardware that will match the awesomeness of the operating system that runs on it… webOS.

Sure,  HP is very pregnant right now with the Pre3 [Who's your daddy! Sorry, had to be said - Ed]. I have held it in my hands on several occasions and let me tell you, it is a powerful, beautiful phone. But in a smartphone market dominated by slab phones, it’s obvious  many consumers enjoy that form factor. Therefore, it would make perfect sense for HP to release a phone that will satisfy that demand.

From our very own forums comes a mock up from a talented member, i_maq. (either that or he has a killer webOS crystal ball that he can screenshot from). Many faithful webOS folks swear by their physical portrait sliders, but most of them will be hard pressed not to drool over this sexy slab. Check out what i_maq has shared with us:

Following on from my thread What The Opal (7″ TouchPad) Needs To Be and inspired by seb_or_sam’s Fabled Slab Phone thread I thought I’d mock up what I imagine the HP webOS slab will look like along with some outlandish specs (Actually not so outlandish as at least one phone on the market has each spec already or is announced to have), so here it is:

This phone would kick some serious butt on a shelf at your local Sprint store [Ah man...here comes the trolls - Ed] We are thinking this is what it might to take to turn consumers’ heads and get some respect from the tech community. Don’t get me wrong, the Pre3 will be a great phone to show off webOS, but this mock up would take webOS smart phones to a new level. If it launched this fall, would you buy it?

“[Ah man...here comes the trolls - Ed]”

OK, so “Ed” is an abbreviation for “snarky comment”?  Insulting your readers is a curious way to increase your audience.  I guess you are jealous that PreCentral has more negative comments so you are increasing your ratio?

“what it might to take to turn”

Too busy being condescending to proofread?

I would buy three of these for the family and one for me.   Slab phones with 4 or 4.3″ (my preference) like this will put WebOS back on the map.

Pre3 designs will only appeal to the small group of Palm loyalists out there who feel in love with the form factor.

If you want to set shipping records and or gain market share 4 or 4.3″ screen slabs are the way to go.

PS – Pre3 or side sliders (Epic 4G) are great but in most (not all) cases the vanguard phone is the slab.   Samsung Galaxy II, Nexus S, etc.

I would buy 3 of these phones…have 2 pre’s and an EVO on Sprint….and 2 touchpads….phones upgraded today if this phone came to Sprint….Make it SO!!!

No thanks. It was bad enough losing the 5-way, 4 hard buttons, and especially the volume set button.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple came out with iUseful a few weeks after HP gives in to your desire for an iClone.

I would love to have this on sprint. It would raise popularity of webOS. cuz notice lots of people are gettin slab phones these days. Just tell about this product to HP. i looked at some of the comments. and some of you have good ideas. All you have to do is tell HP bout this product and tell them about what kind of ideas you want on it. Then HP might make this phone and have your idea on it! Now the next problem is the lack of apps for webOS…

      And share it with Sprint.
