HP App Catalog Update Brings App Preview Enlargements, Finally!

By: , 8/15/2011 6:45 pm | 14 comments

HP has just pushed out an update to the HP App Catalog that brings with it the ability to enlarge the thumbnails associated with apps in the catalog. The new catalog version is 5.0.1400. Simply launch the Software Manager in Settings for the update. If it hasn’t showed up yet, it should shortly.

Simply tap on a thumbnail and a larger version will appear over the app you’re currently viewing. Swipe left or right to view all of the thumbnails in the set. At the moment, the enlarged thumbnails appear just below center when in landscape mode for some apps and not others- a quirk we hope HP will fix in time.

Not being able to enlarge the thumbnails to view the various screen prints the developer has set aside for the app has been a major complaint. Why it took so long to get this working is beyond us, but we’re glad it’s finally here.

We’ll post updates as we get them.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

flattr this!

I am not a fan, I wish they would have used the Photo App style viewer.

At least in the listings, app icons are finally using high-quality versions instead of upsizing small versions, too (still a problem on the app detail page, though).

Does everyone else have the larger preview images appearing at the bottom just off screen?  They can be repositioned, so it still works.

Either way, I’m glad the update is are finally here, but it needs a fix on my system.  Sorli…

I’ve also noticed that if you bookmark an app, then download it, it is removed from the bookmarks. Previously, it would remain in the bookmarks until you manually deselect the bookmark.

What about updating the app catalog on my Pre- ver.1.45? BTW, still sez Palm.

When tapping some apps it will now say ‘This is not a valid HP webOS application’ No way to get out of this and will have to close the whole catalog.. Very annoying!

I posted the following over at p|c, too. It’s a little alarmist sounding but at the time I was dumbfounded as to how HP could release this update to the Catalog. They really need to get their act together.

Original post:This can not be final. It is a HORRIBLE experience on the TouchPad no matter the orientation. In the vertical format it looks ridiculous butting up the the edges of the screen, and the horizontal view is just a joke. Here’s the way it should work:Devs need to upload a minimum of 3 screen shots in horizontal and vertical format. When previewed the screenshot should take up either all of the screen or minimum 95% and should show the appropriate images based on the devices orientation.A simple “rotate device for [horizontal/vertical] preview” message can be shown in preview mode. Please make this happen, HP. It’s the little things like this that help round out the user experience. These little touches MATTER!

I am not sure what good this does.  If the HP App Catalog is selling junk it does not matter if you see it big or little.  I purchased Audubon Trees from it and after several days and 14 download/install attempts no luck.  Install fails everytime.  Not a download issue.  An install issue.
