HP Provides an Update on TouchPad Availability

By: , 8/30/2011 12:48 pm | 47 comments

We know many of you have probably received this same email just a few moments ago. It was sent to everyone who managed to get signed up for updates on TouchPad availability before the overwhelming demand led HP to shut the sign up site down. The email states it could be several weeks before any are available again but includes a unique coupon code for 25% off of all printers, ink, HP accessories, and PCs starting at or above $599. The offer is only good the through the close of business tomorrow August 31st. Below is a look at the email itself (minus all the fine print and my unique coupon code).

UPDATE: Here is where the link in the email will take you. Sorry for not adding it the first time.

flattr this!

Yes, got this email about 9am California time! As soon as I saw the email title w/ TouchPad I was looking for my wallet…but it was a false alarm indeed. Hope I can get me one in the 2nd coming!

They may sell them again, but the firesale is over. The price on eb will now at leastt double and when hp has them “available” again they will probably start a $300 to $400. Meanwhile they have driven a ton of people to their website… More free advertisement. Don’t get me wrong, I want one. Pre+ user, still love it, even after being on my 2nd replacement. I won’t be waiting for a $99 one though. My email from hp just killed that hope.

    • I am weasel

F*** that, HP! Also go F*** yourself!! As I wrote Leo, the already webos users/supporters should have had been prioritized on this, just a way of saying “thank you for patiencetly eating all of our (HP’s) crap all this time, here’s your discounted Touchpad”. But I guess you HP have missed this (alas, last!) opportunity to at least attempt to make things if not right, a little better. F You, and F all of your products!! Come Sept 9, Android on Galaxy SII here I come. Fanatics, I KNOW, don’t even bother replying to this frustrated rant!! I don’t give a **** about it!!!! (ps. Not to mention I HAVE NOT received the email from HP, only my wife did)

      • PalmOn

I totally agree with you. For what its worth, I got the HTC EVO 3D. It runs circles around any webos phone out there. And, now my calendar reminders can be set for more than one day in advance.

But for all the sensitive folks here, webos rocks! Webos will always hold a special place in my heart.

        • Malette

Maybe speed wise, but I doubt functionality wise. I still have no idea what you are talking about with the calender. I can set events on my Pixi plus as far ahead as I want. I do appreciate you are being nicer besides calling us sensitive. Still seems you are missing the point and though you are running circles with your android you are still here. So you must really love webOS.

          • T.A. Portland, OR

If you want speed you need to load preware patches. Made a HUGE difference for me. My TP is as fast a my ipod touch (4th gen) AND I get webOS. Don’t be afraid of preware/homebrew. I was for a long time but now that I’ve tried it I’m a convert. It really works.

          • KarlQ

Amen! Preware rocks! All these speedup features and settings should have come standard in the first release…. Better, what we got from HP should have been called “debug mode” and switched to only when an error occurred. I’ve been running at 1.51Ghz for weeks of heavy use. No problem whatsoever.

        • Brian

you must be joking, I bought a evo3d to replace my failed pre- and I absolutly hate it! It’s the most buggy clunky piece of garbage I’ve ever owned. Yes the evo is faster and google nav is really good, but for 95% of what I use my phone for it sucks, I have to think too much when I use it, unlike the pre that just flows so nice when you use it.

Even tho I am still an Apple loyalist elite, I am now definitely a BIG FAN of WebOS.

My TouchPad is FABULOUS!!!! Now that I have used WebOS, I would pay up to $300 for this tablet,….

I would pay $400 if the could get the touch screen as natural and responsive as the iPad AND if they were able to speed up the tablet performance overall by about 15-20%….

But for $500, there is no reason to buy this over the iPad.

        • Anonymous

I CANNOT believe I am saying this because I am a DIE HARD Apple loyal elite!….

But I could not resist the TouchPad for $149 ( I got the 32GB)… And I LOVE IT!!!!! OMG it is Amazing! The OS is FANTASTIC, the form factor is sleek nice and aesthetically spectacular, the feature list is grand, I love the multitasking, the screen is SHARP CLEAN and neat, the apps are not half bad…

I mean overall, for a version 1 product, this thing is NICE!!!! I am sooo glad I bought it.

Now the down side, it is DEF NOT as smooth and responsive as my iPad, the build quality is NOT as solid and only about 60-85% of the quality of my iPad 2, this is more comparable to the iPad 1,, the camera is not great but good enough, and teh touchscreen is not as smooth, responsive, and natural to the touch.

But overall, I want to buy more if they are $99 for my mom and dad (they are divorvced)…
For what they do with computers, a tablet is IDEAL for them and this is a good one. My mom is already addicted to angry birds.

A nice gesture, but useless to most unless you’re in need of one of the items listed. Most of us are looking for an actual touchpad to buy, or accessories to it, which are pretty much cleaned out. So, another coupon gone to waste.

  • JDM

Gasp! A business pretending to care about its customers?! This is so new it’s AMAZING! They should put this in the history books of how to run a world-class company. HP is wonderful and a great company :)

    • JDM

I whole-heartedly intend to buy a printer and a PC: they are so great! :D

  • JDM

Ehhh, perhaps I’m being too harsh. 25% is a good discount on other stuff.

  • Malette

Strange though I signed up for notification I received nothing. I didn’t expect much from HP so I researched to find one elsewhere. All I can say is I’ve heard some best buys will be having them on labor day sale. So line up! If you call they will laugh at you, tell you the product is discontinued and sill not be sold, and then try to sell you an iPad or galaxy. That happened to me then I showed up, waited a long time, and they said they arrived on their truck. At first I wanted one then though ixnay HP then I thought damn it I want one. Glad I got it though its not a $500 tab its a sweet deal and helps my webOS fix for now. Good luck y’all!

    • Malette

My email just came in over 10 hours after I read this article. Sure would have been sad to miss my chance at a touchpad. Glad I decided not to wait on HP. Just can’t trust them anymore.

Hmm, haven’t gotten the email even though I signed up to be notified after several initial failures to sign up because HP’s website was being hammered.

    • RM

Replying to my own post, the email finally showed up for me.

  • Namgod

I got the email so I’m a bit worried, because they took my money on the 21st and it hasn’t shipped yet.

  • Tdoom15

Anyone else sign up to be notified and didnt get this email???

Hope they limit 1-2 per customer.

  • Flipberkheimer

signed up with 2 different accounts. Nothing in my inboxes today either.

    • Keith E

Same here, I signed up with two different accounts just to be sure I didn’t miss any notifications due to spam, outage, etc..  and even though I successfully signed up, I have not received a single notification from HP about ANYTHING.

  • Jeff

So maybe just a marking ploy to c how sales would go.? Maybe the tablet and pre3 still to come….

  • JoeZiehmer

I think Hurd has a lot in common with the CMP power structure here in Maine. Not only does he leave us a sinking ship but CMP has left us a thirty gallon ton of fail. This backed up by there usage of failing phone banks and an inaccurate system which does not know where power is being restored. Compared to Leo who is a human being and bringing out HP after a messy sexual-harrasment brought along by Hurd I think HP did this to truthfully prove whether or not the TouchPad is marketable. As for CMP voting on a larger scale power information monitoring system which crashed at boo on Irene I wish we could have known the information beforehand. Workers in either case should not be the vents of frustrations. As for the frustrations I feel toward CMP if they had known the calling banks crashed at “x” volume and the site banks crashed at “x” volume I do not think we would be labeling CMP as more out to lunch then HP. Wishing we could have the security of a larger more knowledgeabe firm such as HP developing the software to monitor outages.

  • Aletorruiz

I freaked when I didn’t see the email after I started reading this post, but then I looked in my spam folder and there it was! Don’t think I’ll make use of the discount though, they are giving us a very short period of time to decide to use it. I’m just hopeful that webOS keeps on going. Can’t say I haven’t been bummed for all this mayhem lately and the lack of communication from Tom, Jon or even Leo. We deserve to know what is going to happen so we make the best decision regarding the hardware we invest our money in. VIVA webOS!

    • Aletorruiz

Sorry, is it Todd or Tom Bradley? I think is Todd right? Got confused because of the last article regarding resurrecting the TP, they called him Tom.

  • KB

FYI, the email from HP for the touchpad was in my spam mail.

  • http://twitter.com/webOS81 webOS81

HP: make a statement your retards and made a lot of promises you can’t
keep and your just a bunch of suits who dont “get” whats going on and
how things work. Then apologize and re-release the TouchPad again and
also release the TouchPad go, that was a few weeks away from what I
read. But sell it for $50 since the TouchPads only $99. You will get a
    HUGGGGGGGGGEEEE marketshare.  Haha

    I want a Veer.

  • http://Bungie.net TheKingOfHalo

They just updated their FB page on this topic, check it out.

  • BigFish

I just cannot believe how out of touch (pun intended) Leo & company are. Now a limited run to satisfy demand? I thought you gave up!? I’m still rockin’ my Pre OG (not a minus!) & I love my release day full price TP, but HP has caused me to now go against my morals and, gulp, go Apple. iphone 5 coming to Sprint in Oct & I’m jumping ship – I never thought this day would come. If someone, some how, some way, can save WebOS, I will be back for sure. HP, however, can only screw it up worse.

    • Sean

I’m doing the same. I was at a Apple store today checking out iphone 4. I still think webos is better, but what I got out of visit today was high quality customer service. It’s a shame that HP doesn’t know what that is.
