    Last time I was on a plane the instructions said to turn your phone off.  It specifically said that “Airplane Mode” was not sufficient, you need to turn your phone completely off.  I’m not sure what additional benefit they would get from having you turn your phone completely off vs. using airplane mode.  Maybe the remaining circuits in the phone were putting out RF waves that would interfere with plane electronics.
