Samsung stamps down rumors about a buy of HP’s PSG. Boo.

By: , 8/24/2011 9:04 am | 35 comments

As reported earlier this week, we know Samsung Electronics is shopping around, assumingly in reaction to Google’s acquisition of Motorola. Many speculated the possibility of their buying Hewlett-Packard’s Personal Systems Group (PSG) and therefore webOS. However, Samsung spokesman James Chung reportedly stated Wednesday morning, “Samsung will not take over H-P’s PC business.”

Is there a reason why he specifically said “PC business?” Or does this mean Samsung is not looking to acquire any part of HP? Until more is released, we get to play the waiting game. At this point, though, it does not appear we will see webOS on Samsung hardware, unless through licensing [or this could all just be a game of I can't tell you yet... - Ed].

We will let you know as we hear more.

HP may end up selling their laptop division but I don’t see them getting rid of webOS. It’s too valuable to them in enterprise.

New girl, you’re not supposed to bring me bad news!

    • Daveyboy

I don’t know kayla at all, but why’s everyone getting on her back like this just because she’s a woman?

It isn’t because she is a woman, it is because she is the new writer for WOR.

Everyone has to get hazed a bit when they come on. :)

When IBM spun off their PC division, they had a plan.  HP has no plan, unless their plan was to look as if they had no plan, in which case, they executed that plan to perfection!

Yesterday, Wall Street rebounded, with the Nasdaq up about 3%; HP stayed flat on the floor, where they were knocked on Friday.  That’s not because of webOS, folks.  That’s because the investors realize HP has NO PLAN; “Uhhhhhhhhhh… let’s spin off this division (even though we don’t have a buyer lined up), let’s purchase this company for 5 times what it’s worth…”

Why the heck they haven’t fired Apotheker yet? Except for losing webOS it would be incredible if they didn’t recover. Crazier things have happen.

being optimistic and all….was specific in what he said…not taking over hp’s pc business, doesnt mean they cant make webOS devices

and something i dont think anyone noticed from the original quote from Lee Kun-Hee, the chairman at Sammy, is directed towards software, and states:

“[Samsung] must strengthen the competitiveness of its information
technology, secure more human resources and also more actively seek
mergers and acquisitions … We must pay attention to the fact that IT
power is moving away from hardware companies such as Samsung to software
      companies”

maybe im reading into this too much, but is it possible that HP did this(getting rid of touchpad inventory for INSANELY cheap)
to give samsung a head start, and put the devices into the hands of
consumers, therefor making the deal even sweeter? just speculation on my
      part, but sounds nice…

  • Matt_99_hey

yeah, i wouldn’t take this for anything more than what he said…that’s why he worded it the way he worded it.

let’s get one thing straight here…webos is radioactive. it’s not proven. it’s great, but it’s not profitable.

I just get sadder and sadder, I’d rather see webOS die a ‘dignified’ death than be rejected like a two-dollar h**ker that nobody wants.

WebOs is a great OS but Samsung is a strong worldwide enterprise and have high quality products like smart phones, so they don’t need anything from HP. Now they are waiting for the end of HP in the pc market and the phone market, to take advantage of Samsung’s strenght and increase their share of market. If they care about webOs, they would buy it from Palm but this is not important for them. In the other side, I think editors are optimistic and hope webOs survive but it’ll be difficult. Editors be objective and avoid speculation. It hurt but the end of webOs is near, we must be prepared, however I’ll be using my pré.

  • Asterix

Breaks my heart, but I don’t see anybody wanting to pick up where HP left off, either buying or licensing… And sadly, I don’t think HP is going to keep webOS alive much longer, why would they, just to build printers with it? Who needs a printer with webOS if there’s no ecosystem?… The only option I find possible is for HP to reconsider now that they have all those TPs in the streets which could change things enough to make them think there’s still a chance… Fire saling the Pre3s could help

I still hope SE wants in

    • Daveyboy

Not gonna happen. Leo (and I presume HP’s board, since they hired him) want to get out of the consumer market. So if they can’t sell PSG they’ll spin it off as a separate company (maybe keeping a shareholding) and let it sink or swim

      Asterix, I agree with u.

The guessing game will continue till we hear concrete news. Sadly this may be months yet. Still, I am happy to hear any rumours, speculations, predictions etc from webOSroundup :D

Interesting way for Samsung to phrase its words…will have to wait & seee

Then again, if Samsung gets banned from selling their latest smartphones in Europe and the USA (a la the Dutch ruling this morning), they might start thinking about a plan B…….

    • TimmyB

I guarantee you, they are way ahead of that.  Samsung needs something, because the battles are not going well for them in court.  However, I am not going to be perched on the edge of my chair, waiting for each piece of info.  Would it be good if they (or HTC, or…) picked up webOS?  Time will tell.  99% of the webOS community thought it was good a year ago when HP bought it.  Personally, I would have rather seen Apple have it and actually used one or two pieces of it than to see the half-ass job Leo the the chimp did with it.

Totally agree…webOS has a lot of potential, it just has all those upper echelon Blackberry-using executives not understanding the real power of webOS. I’m continually amazed at how so many executives can’t see beyond their desk. They are all so afraid to stand-up for what they believe. Now, granted, no one has stood up, ergo, no one at HP may really not believe in webOS (which screams incompetence). They’re all sheep, save the monkey corralling them into too tight a space that know one can say what they mean and mean what they say. Sad day for American industry.

Why would samsung buy anything out when they could just license WebOS and make HP do all the software work.

    • CannonFodder

It’s about control of one’s own destiny.  If you’re licensing, you are dependent upon HP.  If you buy it (and my guess is anyone buying webOS would require that the patents go along), the you aren’t dependent upon HP executing on webOS.  Then again, HP seems to be intent on simply executing webOS ……….

Okay this is not the end of the World, Samsung not Buying the PC Business does not mean they will not license WebOS.

    • Malette

Ditto! That’s what I thought when reading this. There lack of taking the pc business over doesn’t mean they are not interested in a webOS license agreement.
