Todd Bradley’s last stand [rumor]

By: , 8/22/2011 1:35 pm | 50 comments

BGR is reporting this morning that Todd Bradley, EVP of HP is looking to move to a CEO position of another company. This isn’t surprising, considering the recent developments over at HP. There’s likely a bit of fall-out from Bradley getting the shaft for CEO when Apotheker took over, too.

The question now is, why is he still at HP? The two rumors as to why he is staying is because of his personal demands and because he is working on a deal that might be worth more than the Autonomy deal that HP announced.

We have to wonder: what deal could he potentially be working on? The man who spearheaded the Palm purchase got Stephen DeWitt and Leo Apotheker talking recently about licensing to third party manufacturers and one company many believe could be the next home to webOS: Samsung.

To those who doubt the idea of Samsung purchasing or licensing webOS, consider the following: TouchPads and app sales are showing huge spikes since the fire sale started, so the market share will see an equal spike. Not to mention Samsung seems it could REALLY use the mother of all smartphone patents in their arsenal as of late. Sure, this could be all pie-in-the-sky kind of talk, but it isn’t totally out of the realm of possibility.

With all this taken into account, including recent patent litigation and PSG as a whole or part, and you would have a deal that would either come close to the $10.3 billion Autonomy purchase… or something far larger.

flattr this!

I wonder if HP is having a Coke Classic moment this Monday after watching their devices fly off the selves across the nation.

    • Falconrap

Been saying the same thing. The price was always the problem. This proves it. They probably could have sold these things at $250-300 and still had them flying off shelves (though not at quite this ridiculous pace).

Maybe the announcement will turn into a New Coke-Classic moment.

Now, THERE’s the rumor talk I like. Keep the orange stars coming….. I need them.

Let’s not forget that per recent web posts, lots of the TouchPad sales are due to people wanting to port Android onto it–not because they care anything about webos.

Just because the bloggers and tweeters in this circle are talking about it doesn’t mean its a large ratio. Don’t forget, there were hundreds of thousands of TouchPad sold this weekend!

Considering there is no Android port for the Touchpad (yet), those who get the tablets will still have to use webOS when they get and play with the tablet. Who knows, some of them might actually like it better than a green robot tablet.

      • Malette

Actually some folks are showing they have successfully got android running on the touchpad. Lets not forget though the majority are probably purchasing because they see an easy way to get into a trend that’s normally a luxury. So for those people usually being non tech savvy they will hold on to the webOS and many are reporting how cool it is and how many things are better than the ipad. So I think webOS just gained many new users who really appreciate it. I do hope a manufacturer sees this and can save webOS.

There might be some people who wanna port android to it but I’m sure they are not the majority…why do wanna port a clutter to a clean house?

    • Falconrap

Two problems with your thought process: 1) most of the people talking about this are Droid fans, while everyone else seems to just be enjoying it as is. 2) the TouchPad continues to be one of the highest rated devices on Amazon (a small influx of idiots posting 1 star reviews having nothing to do with the hardware as recently brought the rating down to just over 4 stars). When people get to use it, they really like it. Why put the stench of Android on it? A bazziollion min-web apps when you have the full web at your disposal?

the build quality of the GTab 10.1 I replaced my Cracked speaker 32gb Touchpad with feels like a BMW comparatively, so I think it would be OK.  I still have my pre – and am hoping like hell webOS has one more life out of its 9.

Oh look.. another glimmer of hope. Part of me wants off this roller coaster but I’m not budging… feed me the rumors!

Eh, I doubt that many people would actually do that after playing with webOS for a bit…
    =)
I’m a doubter on a license deal with this whole mess though… I posted in the previous reasons as to why I feel so about it… “sigh”… Fkn HP!

Having an Android phone iPod touch 4g and now the Touchpad I can definatly say webOS is 100% better than Android and very close to coming to blows with ios. I am not porting droid to the touchpad but if there is a way to install the apps I’m all for it. Webos  is going to stay on my touchpad and it would be nice if the support and apps on it stayed strong. Its a far cry at the moment but its too nice of a system to let die.

I have to agree here. Android feels disjointed in comparison. As for iOS, it’s amazing how well something runs when you limit the OS’s reach.

  • Daveyboy

I don’t blame him. If Todd had been given the job over this clown then we’d be looking at a very different situation today. Look at HP stock – it’s just an abomination. And ruinous.

  • naz-uk

i rather have webos on the touchpad then android gingerbread, i just hope HTC is also a licensee.
