TouchPad Go components sit piled up with HP suppliers

By: , 8/31/2011 9:37 am | 35 comments

Digitimes is reporting HP’s chain of upstream suppliers charged with producing the 7-inch TouchPad Go are currently sitting on enough component inventory to produce about 100,000 of the now cancelled tablet. Production was to start near the end of the third quarter.

Suppliers such as Taiwan-based Inventec, the manufacturer of HP’s TouchPad, are currently negotiating with HP to find a solution for the sitting inventory, but have yet to receive any notification on which direction to take. Inventec declined to comment on HP’s cancellation of its webOS line of hardware and would only point out its relationship with HP remains unchanged. Inventec also makes parts for HP’s desktops and notebook PC’s.

HP is rumored to be taking a $100 million hit from the left over inventory and its selling of the TouchPad at $100. With HP possibly looking to resurrect the TouchPad sometime in the future, will its smaller 7 inch brethren see the light of day? Only time will tell [I am not holdin' my breath on this one - Ed].

And while they’re at it, use up the leftover parts Foxconn has for the Pre3s as well…

Only 100 million? If they sold 500k of the touchpad this would be $ 200 lost per unit (which is believable) but then there we are still missing the Touchpad-GOs.

And I personally think that HP sold more than just 500k Touchpads.

HP handled this really badly. They pretty much managed to angered everyone, right down to the shareholders, consumers AND their suppliers.

Leo is going to have a heck of a time trying to explain this one. Good luck trying to do any more business that way.

I’m not angered with my two touchpads, really nice!!

hehe I know, I bought three 32 giggers from Sam’s Club for $149, I LOVE THEM, the Preware has it running so damn fast!

….Clealy! What a mess!! Structure of this company is crumbling. Who would want any part of it now. Dell CEO, licking his chops! Google….1down APPLE…seeya! SAMSUNG! …finally oh! And LARRY…..Ya don’t have the minds. I finally realized….why did I care about HP

Yeah, it’s definitely a perfect example of what not to do.  HP has done a lot of damage to their business reputation and they only have themselves to blame.

It’s a shame but we’ll probably never see those Touchpad Gos.  We’ll also never know whether any of the phone designs after Pre3 would have been world beaters.

Those TPad Gos would probably fetch a “meager, fire sale” price of $69.50. Bring it on HP.

    • MarkP

Leo probably doesn’t care about angering the suppliers, as he is steering HP out of the hardware business anyhow. Of course that is a bad move, but that is a lesson he will have to learn as he takes HP down.

Regardless, they are still burning their bridges. What happens if their software business isn’t going so well and have to take a step back?

    • FON

So let’s review.  After this performance by Leo, would you recommend HP to your upper management as the best choice to provide the software you will use to run YOUR business?

It likely would cost HP more to complete the units than pay for the components and take a loss.  The biggest issue in Osborne’s collapse was throwing good money after bad: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/06/20/no_osborne_effect_at_osborne/

i’d say these things get made with new price points and used as the resurrection/launch device for the newly created webOS Inc. An hp company. Providing devices that fit the mobile professional. It’s the birth of the new PC. Haha that sounds real good in my head. Too bad I don’t run hp. =)

they need to make these touchpad go’s and sell them for low price points..say $149 for 16 gb, $200 for 32 gb, and if 64 gb is made, sell for $300. Then they should resurrect and sell the white version of the touchpads and call them the touchpad pro and sell for $249 for 16 gb, $300 for 32 gb, and $400 for 64 gb. Sounds good in my head.

  • The Touchpad border enforcer

Well what  can I say Leo is Jewish……money before customer loyalty……..By the way i’m a quater jewish so I can say that statement and I am not going to retract it Leo so Ha! take that!

I have a preorder TouchPad, which I don’t regret spending $600 on, and I’d gladly buy a TouchPad Go at MSRP… Shoot, I’d pay extra if it was the only way to get it.

Imagine webOS on the new galaxy tab 7.7 inch….to dream….

Sad. I did not want a Touchpad at any price but always was willing to pay msrp for the Go. The iPad and similar pads were just a size to big to be portable. The new Samsung 5 and 7 inch tablets are looking mighty tasty. Just wish they has webos. :banghead:
