webOS Boss Says: “Enjoy the Killer Deals on the TouchPad.”

By: , 8/22/2011 1:46 pm | 52 comments

Some say webOS still has hopes of staying alive. Some say it never had a chance. Regardless, we’re all itching to know what’s behind HP’s big blue curtain regarding webOS’ prospects. After all, we’re hearing that HP’s announcement to no longer produce webOS hardware was precipitated by a leak by Bloomberg and was not intended for announcement (or firesale, for that matter) until AFTER a licensee was announced.

So what are we hearing publicly from the webOS Department at HP regarding the TouchPad fire sale? Look no further than webOS head Stephen DeWitt, who tweeted:

Creative spin? Or something greater? … We have no idea yet, but let’s hope those fabled unicorns and rainbows are on the other side.

Funny – I’m not sure he received a lot of “great” messages over the past 48 hours :)

Thanks for the $149.00 TouchPad, Bloomberg!

Or… perhaps hardware deals were already in place…

    • Brother Al

Maybe, but I dunno… The timing seems off.

if the deals were already in place Best Buy would have had prior knowledge and wouldnt have had as many issues getting themselves ready to sell.

Why would best buy have any knowledge of HP’s potential licensing deals?  It’s not like HP is going to tell every major retailer “Hey, hold on, we have sooper sekret corporate level talking going on with [other company] to make hardware even better than what you’re already trying to sell.  SUCKERS!”

I’m so torn at the moment, I can’t stand iOS and Android is only slightly higher on my choices of mobile operating systems.  If I could get some Pre3 love, even knowing the phone support might be dead next week, I’d still take it.

Guess I may have to Frankenpre a Pre 2 at this point.

I was talking about licensing. And… other major retailers had no problem getting the stock up for sale. BestBuy wanted to return them, and made the arrangements to do so. Obviously, the arrangement changed. But, as of Saturday morning, BestBuy had pulled them and was readying to ship them back.

If deals are already in place and the WebOS device notice was forced to the front due to leaks, why wouldn’t HP just come out and say it?

It’s more likely that talks were in process and now HP is struggling to do damage control with whoever they were talking to as well as with the webOS faithful and their stockholders after Fridays 20% loss.

      • http://www.pamelahazelton.com Pamela Hazelton

The loss was expected. Happens often in that type of scenario. And it wasn’t just about webOS, either. It was about the entire computer systems.

Oh, I understand that a major shift like that is going to scare shareholders and stock will go down.  I don’t think anyone on the board expected to hit a 6 year stock low and to loose an estimated $12B of shareholders money (if what I heard was correct, it might not be)

Flooding the market with the cheap tablets introduces people to webOS and helps give developers an audience base for future app sales.  I would think that the real spike in app sales will not start until later this week as the online purchases get shipped and delivered.  Although, I have no clear idea of how many units that will be and if or when they may be converted to Android.  That being said I think getting the products out there make any sales/licensing more valuable to HP over these fire sale losses.

I was one of the last to get a killer deal this (Monday) morning from CDW. They sold over 1,000 this morning and now are out of stock like everyone else.
But is it worth getting a  killer deal from AT&T on a VEER to go with my TP, now that it seems the Pre3 will never be available?

I just heard from my retailer that they sold the pre 3 for € 99 today! Sold out now, of course! Would have liked one! :’(

At least I got a refund for the touchpad, € 370 just went back into my pocket! :-D

My CDW account manager told me they had 4000 in stock – and sold out within 20 minutes and their website is down due to the flood.

Even though i’m a lowly broke college student, this is a deal even i can afford. But, unfortunately i didn’t get the news till today, and now everyone is sold out. Does anyone think that someone will get anymore in stock or is this just a one time thing? If anyone bought an extra one i’d be willing to buy it from you and pay the shipping fee. I’d be able to pay with paypal so the money would be guaranteed. Email me at Tayswg20@gmail:disqus.com   Thanks in advance. :)

HP online store Germany is off line. ‘server too busy’ :-(

“enjoy the killers deals” – if you can blimmin’ get them. All they’ve done is created a profiteers charter and the price doubles on ebay. Cheers HP, I didn’t think you could get any lower than you did last week, but I sure misunderestimated you.

    • Malette

Once again don’t blame the profiteers or HP for that. Blame the lazy ignorant people that pay jacked up prices.

I just purchased from CDW. Unless they haven’t updated that they are out of stock, I should get it in 2-3 business days.

CDW is sold out — my order was processed and I called in to double-check and they told me they were out.. and I was SOL

I can just picture Bezos telling HP: you wanna run our Kindles? You gotta get out of the hardware business. You do this small thing for us, we take care of all your hardware needs from this point forward. You wanna be a software company? We wanna be a hardware company. We will mesh like cream in a puff.
