[UPDATE - HP could have more to sell] Have no fear! All TouchPad orders will be honored!

By: , 9/9/2011 8:43 am | 45 comments

Many of you ordered the HP TouchPad but quickly found it was not shipped before the sell out. Some good news popped up via an email from HP to Small and Medium Business Customers, regarding original orders. HP recognized the great demand and apologized for the delay. They assured their orders would be filled at the discounted price but that it would take another 6-8 weeks to build the tablets. The devices will be sent by means of free ground shipping.
What if you become dissatisfied with the device?

“At the significantly reduced price, the HP TouchPad does
not qualify for our standard 30 day return policy and is not returnable.”

If the arrangement seems unsatisfactory, individuals have one week to cancel their orders. However, once cancelled, they cannot be ordered again.

“…our US SMB store has sold out of HP TouchPad and will not make any further available for sale.”

This is it ladies and gents, the next run for the HP TouchPad will be the last run, and no further orders will be allowed. In 6-8 weeks, those of you that managed to squeeze in an order will have that delightful box delivered to your door. Enjoy!

UPDATE: This communication from HP only dealt with the Small and Medium Business Store. HP has communicated that it does expect it could have more to actually sell for new orders, but they would be sold at the HP Home and Home Office Store and HP Academy Store (same store really). So don’t give up hope and remember to follow @BrynaAtHP and @MarkAtHP for the latest on TouchPad availability!

Thank you, webOSdealer!

flattr this!

It’s also worth mentioning, that the way I read that, only people who ordered previously will be able to receive from the new run.  This bolsters what zdnet reported previously.

This is really a bummer. During the “fire sale” I was unable to enter my name for an email alert. But it looks like that doesn’t really matter, now, because only people who actually ORDERED will get the goods.   I’m sooo disappointed with HP in their behavior i/r/t the TouchPad.

(What do you think the winning bids will be on eBay for the TP’s?)

It’s a shame that Palm couldn’t make a better go of it; Palm always did have the best handheld PDA’s. They know how to do it.

    • VegasPatrickWebOs4Life

Please HP just as quickly as you made that decision to……reverse it! Please!!

  • Asterix

I never ordered, but I did ask for notification, and I did actually receive the mail… Does that mean they will allow me to buy one?

    • Anonymous

Unfortunately, I’d say the answer to your question is NO. If you didn’t actually place an order and have your payment authorized it not happening. I placed an order for one and wish I had the opportunity to order another. In the meantime the monies will remain tied up on my debit card until the unit eventually ships.

I just received shipment confirmation from hpshopping.ca  for my order from mid-August (before The Announcement), so things are finally moving up here. I hope yours ships soon as well :-)
(To be fair to HPShopping, I ordered as part of a “group deal”, so each purchase had to be manually verified. I’d imagine that regular orders would have gone through faster.)

Not to be “that guy”, but PC reported this a few days ago, which is a long time in the new world. But on a related note, I hope those who bought more than 1 to sell it on ebay or some other 3rd party site, can’t sell their TP bc it’s despicable. I want webOS to spread to those who will appreciate it, not just make a profit off cheap hardware

    • Rich Dunbar

Thanks Ryan, we know it isn’t the latest news. But there are many who don’t visit PC but visit our site. So even if we run it late, we still feel the need to run it. On a positive note, this communication from HP only dealt with the Small and Medium Business Store. HP has communicated that it does expect it could have more to actually sell for new orders, but they would be sold at the HP Home and Home Office Store and HP Academy Store (Same store really). So don’t give up hope.

    • JDM

I can’t make up my mind. On one side, I hate opportunists. On the other, I recognize that it may just be my jealousy of their ability to recognize opportunity and seize it (something I suck at). So, are we angry because they are money grubbing a**holes, or are we upset rhat we aren’t quick enough to think that way?

      • Velcro The Cat

Not exactly. I’m upset because they didn’t give existing webos users a preference or advanced opportunity. Even now they have constant app giveaways that run out hours before I can react. Maybe I’m lucky to have a job that distracts me from all these opportunities. It would be nice to be shown some respect for 10 years of palm loyalty.

        • Paul

I’m also upset that real webOS fans (I still love/use my Sprint Pre) weren’t able to buy one (I was waiting for the 7″ w/GPS) – when they killed it I wanted to get the Touchpad w/o GPS because I still wanted webOS tablet…and now my real only options are ebay, which I don’t want to give any money to those jackasses who took it out of the hands of someone that would’ve really appreciated it.

          • http://www.awkwardpwners.com Ryan Vergara

I personnally don’t really ned a tablet, but I just upgraded from my pre classic to a pre 2 and i’m lovin it

  • Sean

I bought more than one to make sure my friends that wanted one could get one. I sold them all at the price I paid for them.

    • Anonymous

      We should’ve been friends! :P

  • Crystal

I am so disappointed to hear this. Is it true that there will be NO NEW ORDERS allowed? That’s the way I interpreted the article.

  • Daveyboy

I’m sorry to say that after reading this I felt I had no choice but to buy one from one of the “resellers”. I tried for nearly three days to get one originally and kept on missing out. I hope I may be able to get a second one in this new run for a family member, though I somehow doubt it. It makes me quite sick to think that i’ve been a loyal palm customer for over a decade but i’m losing out to people turning around a quick buck. Shame on you HP – you should make some available through webos roundup and/or precentral as it’s these two communities that’s been keeping webos alive. Not that you care.

    • JDM

Interesting viewpoint. I made a comment above about this, so I’ll continue. You were a loyal fan but did not want to pay around $400 for a touchpad (you’re not alone), yet when the price became $99, you wanted it badly but were not quick enough to purchase at that price. The opportunists are selling on ebay and you purchased at their (guessing) $300 mark. So, we’re upset that we couldn’t get the $99 pricepoint and feel like HP owes it to us loyal adopters to offer it to us first. There were many discounts before the firesale, so why is it that HP blundered by not offering the firesale to webOSroundup? They wanted to get rid of the product, and we had plenty of opportunity to get it before the firesale. All in all, buying from a reseller is still less than the original retail price, so why the anger at HP (not just you, mind you)? Yes, it’s crappy that people are quicker than us at recognizing money-making opportunities, but at least they’re not selling for more than retail!

      • Anonymous

even when the price was $299 with Staples and HP discounts, its still possible that a $325 (after tax) outlay might not have been in someone’s budget. But I agree with respect to the fact that all Sprint users (the original exclusive carrier for webOS) such as myself who still have an active Palm profile and have never had the opportunity to get any device upgrade should have been given first crack at purchasing one Touchpad after the firesale was announced. This would have served to help “make this right” as Ruby promised us many months ago. A $50 limited time rebate on a $599 device was an insultingly poor effort in this regard.

        • JDM

Yes, nice point. That would have been a nice move by them.

          • Chillipesto

I’ve been tempted by a reseller one, but suddenly a light went on in my noggin – what happens in future when I need spare parts for it? I already hear that HP is returning warranty units unrepaired! I hate my options right now…

Good points, although one flaw in your argument: I would have bought with the discounts were it not for the fact that i’m in the UK and we never saw them and it was full price until the firesale. If HP had managed to get the same thing together in europe (particularly germany) they would likely have seen more sales.

        • Chillipesto

I agree entirely. We didn’t even get a good currency conversion rate on fire sale prices (when does $99 translate to £89?). Anyway, as a UK webOS user, we got the shitty end of the stick. Especially as the Pre came out here first before the US!

Yes HP has a lot to learn in the customer service dept. The Touchpad will go down in history as the most loved & understood tablet. Let’s just hope someone with talent will pick up on this and revive WebOS!

      • Haze

I agree with you. If so called fans really wanted the tp there were plenty of opportunities. Stop crying that you as a “fan” couldn’t get it for 99 before everyone else.

        • I am weasel

Can’t believe how blind and narrow-minded some dudes are around here. Surprising, given they finger webos devices ;)

    • I am weasel

I’ve said this twice, and I’ve also made it a written suggestion to Leo,that the no-brainer and right thing to do should have been making the TP 100% available to the hardcore fanatics, and we would have felt that he has at least tried to make things somewhat right for the community. With announcements like this, there’s no more bitterness in my mouth because all the taste buds decided to commit suicide. As of one week for today, I shall become another “man over board”, there’s a Samsung Galaxy SII boat waiting to come to the rescue! So long!

This is so disappointing. I didn’t manage to get an order in during the last frenzy, and it looks like I won’t be able to get an order in ever.

Oh well, gonna wait out the price gougers and get them when they lower their price.

  • http://www.politicalseason.blogspot.com PoliticalSeason

I have no objection to people who bought multiples to make a profit. I would have done the same had I the opportunity. They are merely making the profits that HP Shoul have earned if they had handled their markt opportunity half as well. Those TPs will still make it into the hands of people who want them, at a price they are wiling to pay and reflects their actual value.

  • Techiedude

It’s also possible that this particular dept of HP will no longer be selling them at the discounted rate except to those that have outstanding orders through them but that HP may sell it via their usual/regular online sales (their “Home/Consumer” division perhaps?) when the final production run is completed. Hard to say at this time…If they do, I hope they beef up their ordering/processing servers before they make ‘em available online though…The weekend of Aug 20th choked their commerce processing ability *badly*…

    • Anonymous

This might just be the case. I did see @BrynaAtHP:twitter mention a few times that SMB is handled differently from the “home/consumer” division. In either case, it makes it less likely for us normal people to get one since the inventory will either be reduced to honor SMB orders, or the inventory will go entirely to all people who put an order in to get a Touchpad.

  • Namgod

Got my HP Oprah moment letter 2 days ago. I’m a winner. A previous letter from HP stated that orders made after 4 am on Aug 22 would be canceled. Looks like the last production run of Touchpads was sold by that time. The only extras available will be from those that few that cancel the order in the next week.

  • Comstr

new, recently produced HP Touchpads is not will be identical as sold outit is low budget chinas crap for $1

  • Giampa

I’m so disappointed that no special offer has been made for the HP employes….

  • Anonymous

of course this is referring only to the small business store which has separate inventory from the home and home office store.

    • VegasPatrickWebOs4Life

Please HP just as quickly as you made that decision to……reverse it! Please!!

  • Jason

Well for those who were able to place an order congrats, I just hope hp doesn’t screw this up too since the faq says limit one per. But the firesale announcement said it would start such and such day and they waited until 4am that day. So people like me who have 8am day jobs got screwed out of getting one because by 6am hp and everyone was out of stock. And you couldn’t place any orders.

  • Anonymous

HP doesn’t owe us anything. They produced a product that didn’t sell well. So they ditched it. Happens all the time. Yes, HP created a case study in how to royally screw up an incredible product. But it’s starting to tick me off hearing “webOS loyalists” complain that they can’t get a $99 TouchPad.

    • Bill Wotring

I tried to buy the $300 Staples TouchPad that weekend and they were sold out. Don’t blame the loyalists for not having $500 within the first 30 days HP finally offered the TouchPad. This is a HP debackle thanks to clueless Leo.

Pay $300 for the 32gb now on ebay. Geez, if I want it that bad, get it.

        • LeosJokeEmporium

Its gonna be a collectible. Like the Leo Edsel, the Leo Pre3, and the Leo TP mark II.
