webOSroundup XL – Now available for your TouchPad!

By: , 9/21/2011 9:26 am | 48 comments

You heard it here first, folks! [Where else would they have heard it? - Ed]

You’re a webOSroundup (or as it’s known in the cool kid crowd, WOR) fanatic right? Got a need to be on the bleeding edge? Is the WOR To Go phone app just not BIG enough? Well look no further…webOSroundup XL, our official TouchPad app is available today, for FREE, in the App Catalog.  Just open the App Catalog on your TouchPad and grab it. Also, don’t forget to review it so that others can know how awesome it is!!

Currently, the app supports the following article types:

  • News
  • App Reviews
  • Tips & Tricks
  • webOS Meetups
  • webOSRadio
  • App of the Day
  • preNotes
  • promoRoundup (promo codes).

You can also send us tips from inside the app as well as access the forums (through the web browser). When you open an article, you can read the article and the comments, as well as post a comment and share the article via Facebook and Twitter (supports Spaz HD).

The app was designed with love in Virginia by this author, a developer with (well, the founder of) Appstuh, utilizing standard Enyo and custom user interface elements. While the app may not look a whole lot like Enyo (until you read an article), it most definitely is pure Enyo. You may have seen me tweeting about an app under development for the past week: the app I tweeted about is this app. It went from a concept in my head to the App Catalog version in 1 week exactly (well, it was submitted Sunday, so technically 5 hours short of exactly one week).

We’re not going to pretend the app is perfect [but it is pretty close - Ed], we want YOUR thoughts on the app in the comments section and we want your recommendations. If you have any recommendations for the app, please post them in our official forum thread. This app was made with the community in mind and we want your feedback.

One last note: the application is 100% open source and is available on GitHub (MIT license). Feel free to pull the app down off the ‘net and modify it. If you add a new feature, just let us know and we’ll merge your code into the official webOSroundup XL application if we feel the feature is beneficial to the community at large. The same goes with bug fixes, except we will accept those almost every time because we’re always looking to improve the app.

So go ahead and grab the app!

And now for some screenshots:

flattr this!

About Arthur Thornton

Arthur is an 18-year-old webOS fanboy and developer. Arthur's first experience with webOS was in August 2009 when he got a Palm Pre. Since then he's owned many of the webOS phones produced, released several loved apps into the App Catalog, and even held an internship with HP's webOS GBU. Fresh off of that internship, Arthur is back at webOSroundup as a contributor.

Downloaded an hour or so ago.  Very nice, only thing would be a different icon for new unread posts like the phone app, to get it all at-a-glance without opening everything.  Very nice interface though.  Thank you sir for your work.

Beautiful work Arthur! It inspires me. Maybe I will borrow some of your ideas for an update to my app.

The apps do use DISQUS comments, just has to be pulled in a different way since DISQUS checks for the window location to figure out what the page is, thus the normal way of using DISQUS doesn’t work and one must use a DISQUS API. That is what is in the app and why the comments section is designed the way it is :)

  • Ries

Very nice! Can I have this on my Pre3 too?

    • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

We would love to make this available for the Pre3 as well but it would require some pretty big redesign to make it functional and smooth on the Pre3.

      • Ries

        Well, I can wait… ;-)

  • JDM

Just don’t drop support for legacy users.

    • JDM

      Thank you.

    • JDM

      Thank you.

webOSroundup To Go will remain on the phones, webOSroundup XL will be on the TouchPad. Simple as that :)

The webOSroundup To Go app was developed by a former editor of the site, Roy Sutton, who now works in the Developer Relations department at Palm. It likely won’t receive much work but when work is warranted for it I can step in.

      • JDM

        Hey, thanks!

  • Brik

    I like it. Thanks WOR!

Thanks, I spent just shy of a week of dedicated time on the app, from the time the concept for it popped in my head to the time I submitted it to Palm. We all really appreciate the feedback.

Nice work Arthur! This is great!

I have the hp veer 4g and love the mobile app. I have an hp touchpad arriving later this week and will download the app. Wish I could get my hands on one of the hp pre 3′s from Europe. Would be very nice, but my little veer does all and more than I need it too.

  • Richard

Works pretty well. Wondering if it caches user creds

Not sure what the problem is, but it’s stalling and not completing article downloads ? Hopefully, this app isn’t capturing user device information instead. Had my first ” to many apps “on the touchpad AFTER installing this app :-(

    • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

There are some issues being worked out with regards to article downloading. It is random, rare, and appears to mostly be a server-side issue that will require a client-side update/fix.

    • Anonymous

Same thing is happening to me too. :( Hope it will be resolved soon.

      • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

An emergency fix is in with palm to be reviewed. If you’re a developer, you can build your own IPK and install it using the source code at https://github.com/Appstuh/webOSroundup_XL

I downloaded it but it just keeps trying to download articles. The circle goes round and round. Been doing it for a half an hour.

    • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

As mentioned above, that is a known issue with the server which unfortunately requires a client-side workaround. The updated version of the app is in the hands of the app review team at palm.

      • Brandon

Any idea as to when the “fix” will be available? I only ask because I am one of the ones unable to use the app. Thanks!

        • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

As with the nature of app reviews, the timeline is unknown. I did make the nature of the update known and I received confirmation from the App Review team that the update would receive a priority/expedited review because it includes an emergency fix.

The app may have started working as expected now, but you may need to give it up to 30 seconds for it to load the data every now and then.

  • Kataran

    Great stuff

Again, as mentioned above, what you are experiencing is a server-side glitch that *may* require a client-side fix, which is in the hands of the app review team (they’ve had it since about 1AM Eastern Time this morning) for an emergency review.

  • angel mae

downloaded this yesterday morning, it was sell trying to download articles this afternoon.  Deleted it and tried to download it.  I am still getting nothing but it trying to download particles.  I am sure it must be a good app everyone else seems to be enjoying it.

    Arthur Thornton,
I love this App while it worked the fist few times.
But I am one of the many that is having problems now.

    To App Review Team,
Please hurryup the fix for the continual downloading updates.

(wishing I had sent this from WebOSroundup XL)

    • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

The update has been approved and should be available for download through the Catalog.

The App Reviews feed may not load which could cause the app to constantly display an error message – this is due to an error on the server that must be caught and fixed, to which work is underway and should hopefully be fixed shortly.

  • Brandon

All seems to be working for me now that I updated the app. Thx Arthur!

a very different GUI approach,  impressive and futuristic. I like the suggestion to shade read topics differently. I am a bit annoyed though by the fact that when I have read details about an AOD, going back let’s me start from the beginning and not from the app I left off. Way To Go!

Has anyone else noticed that there is a face present above the forums box on the wallpaper on this app?
