[Rumor] HP to Pull the Plug on webOS?

By: , 10/28/2011 3:27 pm | 30 comments

Man, it stinks to write that headline. Now please everyone, be calm. This is a rumor. The Guardian reported, and several tech sites have picked up on this, that HP is planning to shut down operations on webOS – software and all.

HP said in a statement yesterday that they would not indeed be spinning off their PC manufacturing division and stated that they are not out of the tablet market. They did say that they will continue their relationship with Microsoft and pursue the Windows 8 platform. We ran a piece earlier about HP testing Windows 8 on TouchPads as a proof-of-concept.

What Meg and friends did not say definitively was what will become of webOS. Whitman did say that they will continue to examine…yadda yadda…. and come to a decision – wait for it – in the coming months. The Guardian piece suggests that an HP insider (unsourced) claims that that will happen not so much int he coming months, but in the coming weeks or even days.  Says the source – “There’s a 95% chance we all get laid off between now and November, and I for one am thinking it’s for the best,” who presumably has another job already lined up.

This would affect the other 500 employees who were not laid off when HP foolishly shut down their webOS hardware division months ago. Where those employees will go – be it to other places in the company, or on their merry way to other opportunities remains to be seen.

As for HP’s plans with webOS should the axe fall? There’s even less to go on here. We at webOSRoundup are strong advocates of the “open source” model. If you’re not going to work with it, give it to those who can. Open sourcing webOS would certainly not attract any big name developers, and would relegate it to a hobbyist platform, but it would allow for advancements to be made by rock stars like WebOS Internals or Canuck Coding.

While we adore those guys and everything they do, we hope that HP can manage to sell or license webOS to a company that will work with the platform. It would seem increasingly unlikely at this point, but perhaps if HP was willing to accept more of a loss, then something would be better than nothing. We have no idea what stalled any of the talks with potential suitors, but we hope that HP realizes that while it may not be 1.2 billion, perhaps a percentage of that might help investors accept the loss more readily. [The patents alone are worth close to that... - Ed]

Unless of course talks with all suitors have stalled because HP is insisting that whoever buys it, develops it. In which case – good on ya, HP.

Now it’s time for the disclaimers. This is a rumor, from one publication. Some rumors end up being 100% correct, but, in this case there is nothing concrete. All the other news sites reporting this are referring back to the same article. You know, kinda like what we’re doing. We’re not saying this would be a major surprise nor that the writing hasn’t been on the proverbial wall, but we have nothing official here.

Please also remember, there is an official member of HP’s developer relations team, Lisa Brewster a.k.a @Adora, that is maintaining a website with constant updates about the status of webOS. Check it early and often.

Our best advice is given by @adotx - Keep Calm, and Carry Palm.

OPEN SOURCE!!!!! OPEN SOURCE!!!!! Please for the love of god set it FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • http://sorli.com sorli

This would be a great idea and they could even close open source it similar to what Google and Microsoft do with their stuff.   Sorli…

Lol!  Lisa must be exhausted from all those constant updates! ;-)

I understand the reason why people are out there speculating on the future and even HP employee’s getting a little cabin fever and just want to break out and say something.  But, this rumor feels like someone who is just trying to start something up to either break up the dam or at least get the resolution moving faster.  I for one think the rumor is patently false.

Honestly, it seems that way to me.  Like I said I wouldn’t be shocked, but at the same time Meg just said yesterday “months”.  Surely that’s not the only word in HP’s vocabulary.  She could said we’ll decide something soon.

    • Fred Marcano

Agreed. Meg said so herself a decision will be made on or after Q3 meeting on Nov. 21st. Keep the faith until HP makes it “Official”. Peace.

      • Soccerinplacer

Q4 meeting is Nov 21st as HP’s fiscal year end is Oct 31.  Also, Meg and Todd are all in with Microsoft tablets.

Todd even said to not hold your breath on a TouchPad 2 running webOS.

Let’s face it – we own a collectors item.

No, Lisa is probably chewing her nails down to the cuticles…

My prayers go out to those who may lose their jobs… “in coming months”.

Too bad it’s not the Senior Executives, penny pinchers, & the damn idiots the have on their Board.

While many of us are hopless optemists, this rumor does not bode well for the future of webos . . If HP can just do one thing right is if they can atleast sell it to a potential buyer or open source it before just kiboshing everything . . Praying and hoping

As much as it pains us, we have no reason to doubt this rumor, when it jives with Arthur Thornton’s source from his former intern days at HP Palm GBU that Palm’s shutdown was imminent. HP just announced yesterday they were making Windows 8 TouchPads.

  • ReneM

Anyone want to lay odds that the person that the guardian talked to is the same person webosroundup spoke to a couple of weeks ago?

    • http://www.arthurthornton.net/ Arthur Thornton

I’ve spoken to my sources from last week and they’ve said they did not contact the Guardian. The Guardian did not communicate with my sources, which only exacerbates the situation.

While webOS going open source would make for a fun hobby, does it really help much? It’s not as if mainstream developers will suddenly start developing for webOS once it has absolutely no corporate backing whatsoever. I suppose if you’re happy with the apps that webOS has today (and with the prospect that support for most of them is likely to fall off), then perhaps that’s a good scenario for you. I just have a hard time understanding why folks seem to want to continue to use a computing platform that has such limited developer support.

    • http://www.webosroundup.com/ David

It helps in a few ways…namely it allows hobbyists to expand it and work on it without any fear of legal recourse.

Will it allow it to compete with Apple and Google? No.

      • http://twitter.com/TheTechChat TheTechChat

I suppose that’s my point: webOS in this scenario becomes, truly and completely, a hobbyist’s platform. And   it would be unlike Linux, in that Linux benefits from running on so many Web servers. Let’s say, webOS would become the Amiga of mobile operating systems.

    • Jmcho

It wouldn’t be of much benefit for HP to make it Open Source if they themselves were discontinuing it.  But, it would certainly lower the barrier for companies to adopt webOS and its ecosystem.  Quite honestly, it would be considered an alternative to Android in the truest sense.

  • Gr8tfullyblessed

What I’m wondering is if the recent string of updates were the last hurrah for the engineers working on webos . . Did they figure that the webos faithful deserves better and decided to send webos off with a fairwell basket as an update ? . . Please say it ain’t so

  • Dutch

I wonder what is up with all those TouchPads in inventory? I wonder why they have been holding on to them? It doesn’t seem to make any sense to put Windows on them. What a mess…

    • Keith Sheehan

They’re using a few Touchpads as test devices for Windows 8. Nothing more. Windows 8 can run on ARM processors so they’re just using what the already have (Touchpads that have ARM processors) to evaluate/test Windows 8 itself.

I’m guaranteeing that HP won’t be introducing a Windows 8 tablet that is simply a re-branded Touchpad. Even Leo wasn’t that stupid.

      • Dutch

Agreed. So, why hold onto the inventory? There have been estimates of several hundred thousand more units. Weird…

  • Avoid

well, if HP just wanted to make it difficult for Android and iOS, they could open source it and hold all the patents. Then when webOS takes off like Android, it will complete far stronger than Android did – since they won’t have any lawsuits against them or licensing fees to Microsoft. hardware companies would want to use that OS because it’s free and that will create a drive for developers. Just by spending 1.2 billion and setting webos free, HP could very well make the market very difficult for apple and google.

    • Keith Sheehan

Unfortunately, if they were to have followed that path, HP should have done immediately after they acquired Palm. Doing so now would probably be a futile effort as most of the competing OSes are gaining parity with or surpassing webOS’s features. Scooping up former Palm/HP employees that worked on the platform tends to help with that.

    • http://www.shop-pc.co.uk Rob Woods

I agree, it would also help any hardware startups – licencing and usage restrictions can be problematic, like androids M$ patent issues (by the way anyone know what those stolen ideas are, surely not gesture swipes?). WebOS free’d could be good, but the market (punters) want hardware too! To be honest, mosy iOS and Abdroid ‘sheep’ care that the hardware is the latest (fastest with most bells), then software a close second. If patents mean money, HP should threaten most other smart phone OS makers for using cards, gestures and Synergy type tech. Anyway, I’d be happy if new HP hardware (TP GO), arrived for Christmas – someone needs another patition for Meg ( video comp anyone?).

WebOS could thrive as an open source platform. I anticipate that you’d see WebOS running on a bunch of formerly Android devices.

  • PalmOn

    Going once, going twice…

  • Lance

The best products without marketing often fail, so goes webOS.

  • Malette

Well that does go in line with lay offs rumor I can’t help but hope it’s part of a transition to a new owner. Though as stated before if that’s the case they would want to retain some of that talent. Though again there may be a suitor that wants to work on it on their own. Some companies are like that. Start from scratch in a sense. Whatever happens open source is better than nothing.

M$ wants webos dead //HP Obliges

  • Darin

WebOs is more user friendly than Android honeycombe 4.0 is as a user of tablets but things are being improved with icecream sandwich being released and time is slipping away . Release Webos and see what would happen in this everything free cash poor country.

That would be a dumb enough move that I could easily see HP doing just that.  Personally, I’ve been considering learning to develop software for the TouchPad.  HP just flooded the market with them, and those people (a) need software to run on their new toys, and (b) saved enough on their tablet that they can easily afford a few apps.
