Cyanogenmod 9 Alpha 0 Released for TouchPad!!

By: , 1/18/2012 12:01 pm | 15 comments

Have you been waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) and Cyanogenmod 9 to come out before installing Android on your TouchPad? Well wait no longer! The awesome people over at Rootzwiki have released [Alpha0] Cyanogenmod 9 TouchPad. This build (as the build number suggests) is highly alpha, and could break your TouchPad. Here is their disclaimer for this build of CM9:

ALL DISCLAIMERS FROM CYANOGENMOD 7 ALPHA 1-3.5 APPLY EQUALLY TO THIS VERSION. BE SURE TO REVIEW THEM. THE USE OR ATTEMPTED USE OF CYANOGENMOD 9 ALPHA 0 MAY RESULT IN VERY BAD THINGS TO YOU, YOUR TOUCHPAD, YOUR DATA, YOUR FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND LOVED ONES. TRY CYANOGENMOD 9 ALPHA 0 ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK!

I recommend that you read the entire forum post a few times before installing this to make sure you understand the risks with this alpha version of ICS. Once you understand the risks, enjoy Ice Cream Sandwich on your TouchPad! If you don’t like the risks that this version of ICS and Cyanogenmod presents, then I would wait for a later alpha. The Cyanogenmod Team did a very good job of releasing newer builds of Cyanogenmod 7 fairly frequently. So if you don’t like the risks, then just wait. It’ll be stable soon enough.

Now this is what I’ve been wanting!

  • JohnK

For a bunch of folks that hated on webOS and the PRE, PRE+, PRE2 and 3, dogged the touchpad for being a terrible device, the Android fanboys sure are trying real hard to use these devices.

$99 for a great Android tablet? I don’t see the problem here; it’s practically disposable at the firesale price, and the performance still beats plenty of the current Android tablet roundup even at $169 for a 16GB Touchpad in the aftermarket.

Sure, the Touchpad suffers from a fatal flaw in that it’s bound to crack at some point due to piss-poor manufacturing practices (in that they carved out the speaker holes AFTER molding the plastic backing), but that’s the trade-off.

Why the hell would you want to put a piece of junk Android on a Touchpad?

  • GTF696

To bad we can’t just have an android emulator app that will allow us to just use ICS in a card. There are only a few apps I’d like to have on my TouchPad that do not have webOS or HTTP support.

That is coming! Check out the article on our sister site mobileRoundup here! http://news.mobileroundup.com/2012/01/ces-is-open-mobile-what-webos-has-been-waiting-for/

They’ve also stated (if you actually wrote them to ask) that

        1. It’s a purely OEM application; it’s not sold to end users
        2. Therefore it’s unable to be released through the general webOS App Catalog
        3. HP would have to pay $$$ to license and release it for webOS through an update

And then you have the whole problem of literally destroying any motivation webOS developers may have had to continue supporting the platform after 300,000 apps flood the webOS platform, drowning them out. Be careful what you wish for, webOS users.

To be honest, I’m scared to update my Android phone because, just like Apple, it might have lots of bugs and errors.

Same things happen (often) with webOS updates, my friend. No need to sink to fanboy scare tactics.

    • MPM

Apple and Android are both piece of crap systems anyway

      • Malette

Amen! I recently upgraded second line to android just so I could take advantage of app market, but I can honestly say that’s about the only good thing. Even though it’s a droid 3 with full HD screen and dual core it doesn’t beat my pixi plus still. Gaining points for apps but losing some for all it’s other flaws like terrible UI and so many bugs like force close on apps I give the Droid 3 a 7. With my pixi plus I give it a 7 too losing points for lack of apps, but gaining points for a better UI and many other things including no force close on apps or other bugs. Say what anyone does I’ve used all 3 OS, yet to try windows, and by far WebOS is my favorite. I don’t know what abuse people put their phones through, but even with the maybe not best hardware and a slower processor my pixi plus is still in great shape nearly 2 years later. I don’t want android on my touchpad. I love webOS just wish HP would have made some better hardware and devs could see it’s awesomeness and develop for it. Of course this is just all my opinion.

Yeah, but at least with webOS, it’s not a severely segmented OS & if an update does crash your phone/tablet, it seldom leads to a loss of all data… So long as it’s backed up.

    man i have
CYANOGENMOD 7 ALPHA and i must say it SUCKS!. It took me a good 20 minutes to figure it out and its so bare. I dont understand how anyone could use this full time on the touchpad. It had the worst browser too. i only use it for some of the games then for anything else i switch to webose.

  • Darnjoel2

2 things and this tablet is the business netflix/hulu and were good I would never even consider putting android on here if it weren’t for those 2 darn things.

  • Gmg

Must be just me, as I luuuurve ICS on my touchpad! It works, very well, looks lovely and browser email etc just as quick/easy to use. No crashes, not one yet! And the apps! So many (not always a good thing, I grant you) but way more than on webos. Wish I could put Android on my pre 3. Sorry guys, liking the hardware but . . .
