HP to Commit webOS to Open Source by Fall 2012

New version of acclaimed Enyo developer tool and source code available now

PALO ALTO, Calif., Jan. 25, 2012

HP today began executing its plan to deliver an open webOS by committing to a schedule for making the platform’s source code available under an open source license.

The company aims to complete this milestone in its entirety by September.

HP also announced it is releasing version 2.0 of webOS’s innovative developer tool, Enyo. Enyo 2.0 enables developers to write a single application that works across mobile devices and desktop web browsers, from the webOS, iOS and Android platforms to the Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers – and more. The source code for Enyo is available today, giving the open source community immediate access to the acclaimed application framework for webOS.

By contributing webOS to the open source community, HP unleashes the creativity of hardware and software developers to build a new generation of applications and devices.

“HP is bringing the innovation of the webOS platform to the open source community,” said Bill Veghte, executive vice president and chief strategy officer, HP. “This is a decisive step toward meeting our goal of accelerating the platform’s development and ensuring that its benefits will be delivered to the entire ecosystem of web applications.”

The webOS code will be made available under the Apache License, Version 2.0, beginning with the source code for Enyo.

webOS roadmap

Over the first half of the year, HP will make individual elements of webOS source code available – from core applications like Mail and Calendar to its Linux kernel – until the full code base is contributed to the open source community by September.

Enyo 2.0 and Enyo source code

Enyo 1.0 made it simple to write apps that worked on a variety of webOS form factors. Version 2.0 extends this “write once, run anywhere” capability to a range of other platforms, including mobile and desktop web browsers.

More information about Enyo and the source code is available at http://developer.palm.com/blog.

Apache License, Version 2.0

The Apache License, Version 2.0 is commonly used to govern contributions to open source software projects. It provides a legal framework that balances open innovation and a dependable user experience, which is consistent with HP’s vision for webOS.

Great news. So with this happening how can I add webOS to my PC or a phone?

  • http://sorli.com/ sorli

Interesting and yes I’m also curious what all this means.  I’m sure if I was a programmer I’d be salivating right now.   Sure is a lot more interesting then what IOS and Android are doing, but then they do have a an edge and platform still being made to run on.   Hopefully webOS (enyo) makes its way to PC, Mac, and Mobile system soon.   Sorli…

Yeah, some new WebOS news, maybe you guys can come back from your hiatus and put out a new podcast! I’m going through withdrawl.!

  • PalmOn

    It lives!

But wait a minute. What is that last part, ” HP assumes no obligation and does not intend to update these forward-looking statements.”. What the …?

    Commitment?

    • Metahec

The last part reads like the fine print to me.

It says, “this is just a press release about future plans nine months ahead. Don’t read any promises into it. If something comes up and we need to change plans, we aren’t coming back and updating this ‘forward-looking’ press release”.

      • PalmOn

That would seem reasonable. Go webos! Hopefully by this time next year I’ll be running webos on my HTC EVO 3D!

  • PalmOn

Hey–where did everyone go? No one else is posting comments on this story? This is the biggest webos news since HP announced webos was going open source. Is everyone now over at androidcentral.com?

  • ajguns

For everyone out there, we (webOS lovers) are here! Just that some of us just understand about enjoying webOS, not developing it; so it’s kind of hard to truly understand this news. But it must be good, so… LONG LIVES WEBOS!!!

Great news.. Finally something pretty solid that is announced by HP regarding webOS!

I ordered a TouchPad 4G, can’t wait to get my hands on it! I still think it’s a very good operating system and I’m confensed that I won’t work as fast

      - sorry something went wrong –

..with another OS than with webOS. Especially with copy, cut, past and all the other shortcuts you can do with the gesture area! And the notifications.. I really love it! Especially the advanced 3.0 version. I love skype on my pre2, but I still miss WhatsApp! If HP would finance the development of the webOS version, then they would get their investment back from the App Catalog! Ow, the App Catalog, a lot of people around the world still can’t get paid apps… This also costs HP money!

Just thought that I would let you all know that Woot has the 32GB ($219) and the 16GB ($169) for sale…they are refurbished though. Hope you all can use them.

  • Domi

Enyo 2.0 with crosspplatform development is a bright thing to do. Programmers used to other platforms’ development software will use it with their favorite platform in mind . But they will “just have to tick the box” so that it compiles for droid and iOS, and as browser apps to boot.
That will increase a lot the programmers base for WebOS, and at the same time provide them with a greater market for their apps!

HP MUST make a download for webOS available as soon as possible. We need to be able to install webOS on any computer or phone. DO IT NOW!!!

  • CyberPhunk

Sadly I see no reference to the palm os source that HP so ingloriously set aside.

It would be nice to be able to use our older palm os apps once again.
