Have you seen the Zeen? [Updated - Zeen uses Android?]

Please check the update at the end of the article…

At the end of last year, HP filed for a trademark on a portable computing device called the “Zeen.” A lot has been going on at HP recently, as you well know. Today, we found out from Engadget that there is an FCC filing for a product called the HP eStation Zeen. The form factor is definitely looking like a tablet, but there is nothing in the filing to say what the software will be like.

Is this the Slate? Is this the PalmPad?

TOP PICK: What’s For Dinner? Premium

Looking for recipe apps for webOS is no easy task. After you bypass the selection from Brighthouse Labs, you are not left with a lot to choose from. Make sure you do not miss What’s For Dinner? Premium by Snazzy Software ($5.00 in the App Catalog). This is a webOSroundup Top Pick and is definitely the best recipe app for webOS that I have come across.

In my earlier review of Video Cookbook I pointed out the lack of written recipes. Well, that’s exactly where What’s For Dinner? fits in. One of the most important aspects to any recipe collection is numbers. What’s For Dinner has this covered. With recipes from nine different websites, I found it very easy to find recipes that interested me. Those websites include FoodNetwork.com, Epicurious.com, FoodAndWine.com, and WeightWatchers.com. You may want to experiment with which sites you like the best. The more sites, the slower the searching will be.

webOSRadio records tomorrow with special guest Rahul Sood!

So here is something exciting. Tomorrow we will be recording the 10th edition of webOSRadio!!

What? That isn’t exciting enough? How about this…joining us will be HP’s very own Rahul Sood!!!

For those who don’t know who he is, Rahul founded the luxury PC company Voodoo which was bought by HP in 2006. He is currently the CTO of Advanced Computing and Gaming at HP. Rahul burst onto the webOS scene when he encouraged game developers to “get in on the ground floor” of webOS because big things are coming. Those comments quickly put him on the list of people we would love to talk to. Fortunately for us, he loves to talk webOS so he has agreed to chat with us during our podcast tomorrow.

So, here is the fun part. During our little interview, we are going to do some question and answers from you guys! If you have something that you have wanted to ask him about, simply pose the question on our forums and we will do our best to get an answer. Please understand that we probably won’t be able to get to all of them, and Rahul probably can’t give answers to all of them (i.e. when is the next phone coming out).

We are very excited and very thankful to Rahul for taking the time to chat with us.

We are the champions! Oh wait… nevermind, we aren’t

So a couple of days ago, Android was crowned the king of the mobile OS wars by reportedly selling more phones that use it than any other OS. Now I understand that the other big boys (namely RIM and Apple) will dispute this with some statistics that show them ahead, but that doesn’t matter much to us now, does it?

This is a site about webOS, right? So where do we fit in? Dunno… we aren’t on the chart. Well actually we are, we are grouped with “Others.” *sigh*

So what is going on? webOS has been claimed far and wide to be the best mobile OS on the market right now. Why aren’t we leading the pack or, heck, at least on the chart? Where the heck is HP and all the promised awesomeness?

Dunno… but I do know that the faithful are getting a little nervous.

Rumored Fall Sprint Lineup Includes C40

It seems as though every webOS fan out there is dying just to hear any news of new hardware in our future. Despite the fact that we are not big on rumors around here we had to pass this juicy bit of gossip along to our readers. Fone Frenzy has reported a rumored Sprint Q3/Q4 lineup and guess what is at the top of the list? None other than the HP/Palm C40! Read the rest of this entry »

Review: Moon Info Pro

While deciding to review this next app I asked myself, “What in the world would I use this for?” It isn’t a game, it doesn’t do much in the way of productivity, nor does it in any way shape or form resemble anything I’d want to use every day. But then I thought back to my days as a competitive bass fisherman and how I used moon phases to predict the best days to get out on the water for a good catch. Where was Moon Info Pro by Roboter-teile.de apps when I needed it?

Using moon phases to predict good and bad times to fish and hunt has been around for many, many years. Sportsmen count on solunar charts to pick the best time of the day or night to catch their bounty; many of them swear by it.  Sportsmen and amateur astronomers alike will enjoy Moon Info Pro for webOS to keep track of daily moon activity right from their phone.

Win a Palm Pre Plus and Support a Great Cause!

We like giving away stuff, but we also like supporting great causes. So it makes sense that we try to combine the two, right? Here’s the bottom-line up front – we want to give away a Palm Pre Plus on AT&T to one of our followers. But to win, you’ve got to do one very small thing. ;)

My brother, Joe Dean (that’s him to the left), is getting ready to run a full Marathon on December 5th of 2010 to raise money for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. His goal is $1000, but right now he’s only got up to $335 by conventional methods. I figured that it’s time to step things up a bit, though, and see if you webOS lovers wouldn’t mind giving him a hand.

Here’s a brief explanation of the event from Joe:

For me, this is my first marathon. When I found out what charity it was contributing to, it made it even more important. Although not personally affected, I am well aware of the effects of Crohn’s. One of my best friends has to live with it.

Research funded by events like this will help advances in treatment and medicines designed to minimize and hopefully one day eliminate this disease that affects 1.4 million people.

How To Win:

To be entered to win is pretty easy. While we hope (and strongly suggest) that you consider donating a few dollars to support his marathon cause, we only require one thing from you: Either comment on this post below or share it publicly with your followers (be sure to send us a link so we can count it). On August 12th we’ll pick the winner.

Easy, huh?

And, of course, if you do decide to donate a few dollars, I can tell you now that Joe is greatly appreciative of your support (he told me so himself!) and so are the people at the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. And so are we! That’s why we’re giving away this cool prize.

UPDATE: Joe left this comment for you guys to see.

Thanks so much to everyone that has commented and donated to this great cause. I will be sure to train up and run a good race.

Good luck, Joe. Run well. :)

Steer Clear of the Bogus Apps

Late last night we received several tips of a fishy Opera Mini app that popped up on the Palm web feed. So we decided to take a little look at it and it did appear to be bogus. The first thing that appeared to be suspicious was the app name “OperaMu”. Next  the developer is  PreCentre and not Opera. If there is going to be an OperMini browser for a webOS device it will come from Opera. The icing on the cake is the app description:

“This App Is The Opera Mini, The Best Web Browser In This Condition. Free (For A Limited Time Only) So For People That Like Opera Mini 5. Here It Is OperaMu” Read the rest of this entry »

Review: Communicate Speed Dial

Speed dial apps have been around for some time for webOS. Despite the fact that these apps have been out there for so long I had not downloaded one until a week ago. I never really felt the need for one as the universal search in webOS has always worked fine for me. However, when I came across Communicate Speed Dial by Newness Development I figured it was about time to give one of these apps a try. The fact that this app is getting rave reviews in the Palm App Catalog didn’t hurt its chances of me downloading it either! So, once again I tapped on the good ol’  ”shopping bag” and downloaded me yet another app to add to my ever expanding repertoire. Read the rest of this entry »

Featuring the Featured Apps App

If you haven’t taken the time to look at Palm’s Featured Apps app, take the minute or so to download it today. If you already have it on your webOS device, be sure to fire it up today.

The user interface of this app is very impressive. Hopefully, the UI elements used here will make their way into the updated App Catalog when webOS 2.0 comes along.

One of the concerns about this app is that the apps that were featured would become stagnant. We’re glad to see that this has not been the case. As they promised, Palm has added new categories and new featured apps. Two of the new categories are Card Games and Food and Dining. They also added some new apps in the Travel category. Be sure to check all of the new additions out.

Don’t worry. Palm made sure not to throw us all into some kind of weird M.C. Escher-like infinite loop by making the Featured Apps app one of the featured apps in the Featured Apps app!

What can we do to make webOSRadio better?

So today we published #9 of webOSRadio and we have been very humbled by the response. We have gotten a lot of very positive feedback, and we appreciate it all very much.

But as kind as you all have been, we know darn well that we are still very wet behind the ears when it comes to the podcast game, so we would like to pose this question to everyone:

What can we do to make webOSRadio better?

  • What do you like about the podcast, and what do you loathe?
  • What would you change, or not change?

Any feedback, both good and bad are greatly appreciated. In fact, we appreciate them so much, that if you leave some feedback in the comments or twitter (just be sure to include the hashtag #webOSRadio so we can find you) we will enter you in a random drawing for one of our awesome t-shirts.

We will leave the contest open throughout the weekend. You can enter as many times as you want as long as each piece of feedback is helpful (and constructive) and not the same thing over and over.

The end goal is to make the best webOS podcast on the planet, and we can’t do it without you guys.

Thanks and good luck!

Considering your Options: Facebook Chat

image

It’s undeniable that some of us rely on Facebook more than others. While the official facebook app on webOS is good at what it does, it’s missing something crucial for many: Facebook chat. The team over at Palm updates the app frequently so we’d expect to see this feature added in the future. In addition (as you will read later), webOS already has native support for Facebook chat. In the meantime, however, read on for a guide on different methods for connecting to Facebook chat on webOS.
