Years ago (around 2001 – 2002) I created and ran a simple, text-based, online game called the Octagon. Originally it was a spreadsheet created by an Excel genius whose name was Charlie (can’t remember his last name at this point). I worked with him and helped him bring it online. Over a few months Charlie no longer had time for the game so I took it over and rewrote everything in PHP and expanded it considerably.
The goal of the game was to create a fighter that you then managed and upgraded, bought items for and talked shmack to the other players. At it’s peak we had about 300 players or so. It was a lot of fun, but it eventually took too much time to run so I had to shut it down.
I say all of this to give you an idea that I am intimately familiar with games like Mobile War (by MobileWar.net for $1.99 on the Catalog). Also, it gives the foundation for why I feel as though the game has a lot of potential, but is currently not living up to it.

A while back, I wrote an article titled “
How to: Get Ringtones on your Palm Pre.” It had a lot of good stuff on there about… well, setting up ringtone! I also wrote about
simple, safe, and easy fixes for the Palm Pre’s most common problems. But as I helped beginners with their Palm Pre’s, I noticed how lot of people felt TOTALLY LOST on doing even the most BASIC functions (like copy/paste… hello?), even after having owned it for a while!
.
Fear not, friends, because TOTALLY PALMED is your mejor amigo. … That’s “best friend” in Spanish…… never mind. Read on after the break to see cool videos on how to work your new Pre or Pixi.
Got a new Palm Pre? Have you been searching high and low for that user manual that never came with it? Well once again, Totally Palmed and webOSroundup have come through in the clutch! We had to slit a few throats to obtain this sensitive information, but you can reap the benefits… For the official SPRINT Palm Pre user guide, click here. Last week during Palm’s heavily anticipated CES Keynote Presentation we were bombarded with quite a few exciting announcements regarding the webOS platform. 3D gaming, Video Recording and Editing, Flash 10.1 and new refined hardware models. The bad news, however, came to existing Pre and Pixi owners who are currently locked into Sprint contracts for at least another year, when Palm announced that the new upgraded hardware models would be exclusive to Verizon Wireless.
Sprint users were the ones who originally embraced the webOS platform upon it’s arrival to the world, but now we are unable to partake in the enhanced goodies that Palm is rolling out at the end of this month. Personally I find that it was worth it to experience webOS a good six months before anyone else could. I enjoyed witnessing the birth of Homebrew and the advancements of Patching and Tweaking resulting in what the platform exists at today, there are only bigger and better things ahead.

As we find ourselves in the month of January in a new year and a new decade, you can find the more ambitious among us carrying out New Year’s Resolutions of getting into (or staying in) shape. With that in mind, ConmigoLife offers a handy fitness app called Conmigo (“with me” in Spanish) that helps you connect with other fitness enthusiasts to go for a walk, run, or bike ride together, even if you aren’t physically in the company of your fellow participants. Conmigo allows you to create and participate in events with other Conmigo users utilizing the magic and sorcery of the internet. Using the GPS unit in your webOS device, the app tracks your progress, as well as the progress of all other participants of a given event, and displays it in real time for all who are enrolled to see. This gives you a fun way to gain support from other users, or to be competitive with a friend (or foe?) that might live in another state or town. The premise is quite interesting and unlike anything I’ve ever seen in a fitness tracking application before.

It’s been six months since the birth of Palm’s resurgence, and here at webOSroundup, the numbers are in. We all know how important apps are in the smartphone race. Despite being only six months old, Palm’s BETA App Catalog provided us with some very decent apps, top-notch Twitter clients, and fun games. Thanks to continued tabulations of Palm’s App Catalog counts by Palm Real Reviewer Craig Froehle (@CRA1G on Twitter) and yours truly, we have some real interesting data to show you. (After you’re done with our blast to the past, check out Mr. Froehle’s article from GearBits.com for a look at the future!) … Here’s the basic breakdown:
- After exactly six months (1/6/10), the U.S. app catalog reached 1023 apps
- About 2/3 of those are paid, and the other 1/3 are free
- After six months of being in public beta with only select webOS developers, Palm officially launched the App Catalog and formally opened it to all app developers.
So, the question begs… how are they doing? We’ve got all of that, including a really interesting comparison to the Android Market’s numbers, after the break.
