Review: Video Cookbook

Are you an amateur chef? Do you enjoy cooking, but don’t always have a recipe idea? If you go and browse the App Catalog, there are very few recipe apps that aren’t made by Brighthouse Labs.

If you like getting cooking recipes from cooking shows, then maybe Video Cookbook by forwebOS.com ($0.99 in the App Catalog) is for you.

If you aren’t familiar with forwebOS.com, they are the same dev shop that have made a few other popular apps including ActiveCard 2.0 and aniWeather. The one thing that I’ve come to expect from this developer is a good user interface (UI). Video Cookbook does not disappoint.

Advice for the webOS Community

stop-complaining Readers of webOSroundup are surely familiar with Tim Stiffler-Dean of Palm Pre Challenge fame (and regular contributor here on WOR). Tim is more intimate with his phone than most of us and he clearly cares about his phone. On his blog, he posted his opinion on a recent theme of discussion in the webOSverse: new hardware.

Everyone should click through to his post. To summarize, Tim suggests people “shut-up” about requesting new hardware and instead focus on bettering our community. He explains such comments encourage “disorder and dissent,” which are attitudes that don’t move webOS forward. This negative mindset affects users on multiple fronts, such as developer interest and media attention. Arno Arni’s fan-made commercial is the perfect example of a productive contribution to the webOS community (embedded after the break).  However, please don’t take this summary in exchange for reading Tim’s insightful post. Internalz gets a big update with some new features

If you are not familiar with the Homebrew file manager Internalz, then you may be familiar with its developer, Jason Robitaille. Jason is also the developer of the much used tool WebOS QuickInstall. Internalz is the one and only on-device file manager for webOS. It allows you to move, copy, delete, rename, and edit files on your webOS phone. If you have not already used Internalz and you want to take a little more control over your phone, then this is a great tool to have. You can get Internalz through Preware or WebOS QuickInstall.

Internalz v1.2 was released today with a few new features. These include Master Mode, an ipk installer, and a patch installer.

Master Mode allows you to control all files on your webOS device, not just on the USB partition, as on the default mode. If you do turn this mode on, be sure to use extreme caution. You don’t want to mess up any essential OS files.

Block Breaker Review

I am a child of the 80′s. Therefore, I grew up on simple 2D arcade-style games like Pac-Man, Burger Time, and Kung Fu. During my early childhood in the 80′s my mother owned an arcade and the games in this arcade were my “baby sitters.” The “sitter” I was most fond of during these years was Arkanoid. Luckily, since my mother owned the arcade, I had the keys to the machines or I swear I would have dumped every quarter in a 100 mile radius in that game. Needless to say I was hooked! Eventually the arcade went the way of the Dodo and my mother had to sell the business. Despite not having an arcade as my personal playground anymore I never forgot how much I loved Arkanoid. [ed. note: David did a video review of Block Breaker version 1]

So there I am a three days ago surfing through the App Catalog and I stumbled upon Block Breaker by Invasive Bamboo.  All my childhood memories of  a sweaty old arcade and a dusty Arkanoid machine came flooding back so I didn’t think twice about downloading it. I’m happy to report that the $1.00 (50% off sale) is worth every red cent as this app lives up to its heritage! Read the rest of this entry »

HP is Only Using webOS in ALL Future Smartphones

Todd Bradley, former CEO of Palm and currently at HP, commented after the Fortune 2010 Brainstorm Event (which we covered here) about the future of webOS on mobile devices, and made it very clear that HP is only going to use webOS in their smartphones. This is, obviously, really great news since that means they really are pouring everything into webOS and Palm.

A few statements that he made in the video (which we’ve linked to below) seem to strongly point to HP trimming back on their dependency on other companies (like Microsoft) so that they can put full focus on their new Mobile Development Division (of which Palm is now the primary brand). They really want this thing to scale, and so do we.

What does this mean for the competition? To put it simply, HP really means business with this acquisition and they don’t plan on messing this up in any way. By cutting out Android OS and WinMo7, they are cutting away a lot of the risk that comes with it, and can build a reliable and credible name for webOS and Palm.

Check out the video interview that Bradley had with CNBC’s Jon Fortt by clicking here and scrolling down.

Now why couldn’t they say that during the interview?

WRAP-UP: Mobile Monday with Dion Almaer (Part 2)

You’ve already read part one of this wrap-up about the Mobile Monday event that we live-blogged on Monday (or if not, click here). Dion Almaer had a lot to say at the event, and while I wish I could have put it all in one succinct article for you to skim through, that just wasn’t possible.

Dion didn’t say a whole lot about the devices and software that were coming from the new HP/Palm marriage, but he did have a lot of other things to say that can give us some insight into what could be happening next and what we can expect in the mobile web world as a whole.

Last time I wrote about what is coming at HP and Palm. In this article I’ll hit on what I believe was the more interesting half of the event – the Future of the Mobile Web.

App News: Eponyms Medical Software Hits webOS

Medical peeps, rejoice! Thanks to the efforts of legendary webOS fan Alan Teh (a.k.a. “Palmdoc“), Eponyms has been ported to webOS! Eponyms is a quick-reference database of over 1700 medical terms, signs, and procedures, all selectable by a scrolling list. Type-to-search is thankfully supported, as are fun little features like a “Random Eponym” button and the option to search additional sites to learn more about the eponym you are studying. As Alan Teh points out in his blog, this application was written entirely in Ares, Palm’s browser based webOS development tool. Big thanks to Andrew Yee, the original creator of Eponyms, for allowing the database to be ported to webOS!

Interested? Download Eponyms directly to your webOS device!

Turning HP into Apple

Apple. Love them or hate them, they have transformed the world of tech. The company, by a lot of standards, is relatively small, and yet they wield incredible influence. For instance, HP makes twice as much revenue as Apple every single month, but Apple actually makes more profit and has a stock of considerably more value than HP.

According to a new article in TechCrunch, HP is seeing green when it comes to the Big Fruit. I am not talking (just) about money here… they are envious of Apple’s persona. Apple is kind of like that jerk in high school. You know the guy… he is a huge jerk to just about everyone, but he is built like a truck, smiles like a Ken doll, and all the girls love him? Yeah… HP wants to be more like that guy (with less jerkiness hopefully).

Apple is viewed as the cool company, while HP is more like the guy with the stapler from Office Space. Sure HP has some cool brands, like Voodoo inspired laptops and such, but overall, they are pretty dumpy.

Enter webOS…

Review: Five Or More

I like a good puzzle game as much as the next guy. Don’t get me wrong, I like the flashy, 3D stuff, but a straight up puzzle with simple gameplay brings a smile to my face too. Five or More by Code of Doom ($1.00 in the App Catalog) reminds me of a Bejeweled style game, but without the flash and gloss that Bejeweled is known for.

The object of Five or More is to line up five or more of the same color dots on the screen. Once that’s done, the dots disappear freeing up the spaces for you to move more dots around. The more spaces you clear, the higher your score. The tricky part is each time you move a piece, three additional pieces appear on the board. The game play gets a little tougher as your empty spaces fill up and you run out of room to line up your colors. Once the board is filled, the game is over.

Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech Wrapup (with video)

So… yesterday there was a lot of hype about the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference where Jon Rubinstein and Todd Bradley got together and answered some questions. HP was kind enough to give away codes to just about everyone so that they could watch the interview for free (as opposed to about $400). They were pushing it pretty hard throughout the day, so I was hoping that there would be some sort of announcement.

Sadly… I was wrong.

The chat lasted about 30 minutes and we did get a few nuggets, just nothing mind blowing. Actually the most exciting part was a moment when it looked like Todd pulled out a phone and says “here is something cool” (or something to that effect). All of us chatting in the liveblog got all excited and hoped the camera man would zoom in. Unfortunately… it was just a Pre. *sigh*

So what nuggets did we get? Let’s see…
