Let’s say you’re a tough-talking, right-walking homebrew webOS app. You’ve got tons of street-cred and everyone respects you, but that’s just not enough any more. You need more than street-cred. You want to feel legit! What’s there left to do but submit yourself to the Palm App Catalog?
That’s what developer dtztech did with their Gameboy/Color/Advance emulator app VisualBoyAdvance, and guess what? It’s approved and in the App Catalog available for download right now! For five whole American greenbacks you can get your retro-gaming fix wherever you are with your webOS device. All you have to supply are the games.
Congratulations to dztech for your graduation to the App Catalog and to the entire webOS homebrew community!
Ok, it is time for the first ever webOS community hackathon! Feel free to drop in and say hello even if you aren’t able to design or code.
You can also follow us as we tweet about the event on @worlive and with the hashcode #worlive.
Join in with us in the chat room after the break!

UPDATE! (8pm ET) We’re hard at work over here. Thanks to everyone participating! It’s been fun! For the scores of folks anxiously waiting outside our “delivery room,” here’s a splash screen teaser. ;)

Ok, so we told you we had some cool prizes cookin’ right? Well, we finally got everything squared away and ready to go (nothin’ like the last minute eh?).
So we have been working on this just about all week and are really excited. I think you all will be too.
Ok, here’s the deal. Palm is easily the coolest company in the world. Why? Well, when I mentioned that we were doing a Hackathon they couldn’t wait to help out. Lisa Brewster (aka Adora) emailed me and said that Palm will provide a touchstone for every person who is designing or developing the app in the hackathon. How cool is that?
But wait there’s more!!!
Not only is everyone getting a TS, but they will be commemorative and one of a kind. See that picture up above there? That picture will be put directly on the touchstone (the big circle part) to celebrate the first ever webOS community hackathon! If you click on it, you can see a super huge version of it. Also, if you look really closely, you can see the new WOR logo on top of our building.
But really this is just the beginning. All of those who participate will be enshrined on the image you see here. The developers who help out will have their logos placed all throughout our little city there. Once we get them all setup we will be issuing a free 7 x 11 inch downloadable poster to everyone. Note, because of the size of the touchstone, we are pretty sure we won’t be able to put the various logos on there. We are gonna try, but that little circle is awfully small…
And if that is STILL not enough, we will be giving prizes like free t-shirts, $$ to buy some apps, and anything else we can think of all throughout the day to those who are hanging out in the hackathon chat room.
Wanna participate? Keep on reading for details…
When and where.
So the hackathon will officially begin at 10am eastern and will be completed at 10pm eastern. Of course we might go a bit after that if we are still finishing up, but that is the schedule.
If you are super hardcore, you can join the coordinators of the event at 9am for a little pow-wow and setup meeting.
The event will be taking place right here on the site. We will have a fancy chat room setup for all the devs, designers, and groupies to hang out. So whenever you have some time to join in, just check the homepage and you will find everything you need.
Really looking forward to this! Hope to see everyone there tomorrow.
Ever since Palm was the glimmer in HP’s eye, webOS faithful have been salivating over a webOS tablet. Well, our fantasy device was finally confirmed during HP’s quarterly earnings call yesterday, when they indicated that a webOS tablet would likely come out in Q1 of 2011 (after they release a Windows 7 Slate… interesting).
We’re all rejoicing about this, crazed webOS fans that we are… except there’s one problem: nobody else knows what the hell webOS is. Oh yeah… and has anyone actually counted the number of tablets that are about to flood the market?
Well, Harry McKracken from Technologizer did just that in a great article titled “iPadversaries!” Listing each tablet that is already on the market, planned to enter the market, or still in concept form, he tallies a total of thirty-two devices considered to be “adversaries” to the iPad. (See? That’s where he got that title… just in case you didn’t figure it out.)
We break down his numbers and draw up our conclusions, after the break.

Now that the PDK Hot Apps competition is in full swing, webOS app Developers really want to increase their sales. What’s a great way to increase your sales? Drop your prices!
Glu Mobile did just that today. If you take a look at the App Catalog, you will see that they’ve reduced the price on their games to $0.99. If you have not picked up some fun games like Glyder 2, World Series of Poker, or Family Guy: Uncensored, then now is the time. There is definitely some fun ones to try out.
All of you Sprint Pixi owners rocking webOS v1.4.5, now you can try out some of these fun games.
Speaking of Glu Mobile, the lead guy here at webOSroundup, David, still owes us all a review of How to Train Your Dragon. David, now that the price is less than a buck, how ’bout it?

Anybody who knows me will tell you I am a huge fan of old-school 2D games. I am especially fond of any game that allows me to blast alien bad guys into oblivion! Therefore, Radiant by Hexage was a no-brainer for me when I got some of the 1.4.5 PDK goodness in the app catalog.
This app hearkens back to the good ol’ days of Space Invaders, Asteroids, and Galaga with its 2D graphics and arcade style shooting. I swear after I lost my first game I was looking for a coin slot on my phone so I could put in a quarter! In that nostalgic look and gameplay is where you will find this game’s charm.

Our Twitter friend @benfysh likes to do some digging whenever questions need answering. So he posed the all-important question to developer Rovio Mobile “any word on the release date for Angry Birds on webOS?” (or something like that)…
Their response? … “Pre has been complete for some time, found some problems with Pixi in testing, so might release just Pre first and Pixi later.”
Now you know, folks! Stay tuned.
UPDATE! Thanks to @benfysh’s persistence (dude… nice going!), Rovio Mobile has disclosed that Angry Birds for webOS will likely release early next week for the Palm Pre. Schweeeeet.

The Touchstone wireless charger has to be the most elegant charging solution for mobile phones to date. (If you don’t have one yet, get one for dirt cheap on Verizon’s site!) Not only does it look cool, it also incorporates breakthrough “sticky” technology that allows your Touchstone to stay in place: tiny “nanotubes” create suction when compressed on a a flat surface. Over time though, thanks to dust and grime getting in and around those tubes, its base tends to lose its stickiness. How to fix it?
Easy. According to Palm themselves, the quickest and easiest solution is… (drumroll)… Scotch Tape.
Just pat the bottom of your Touchstone with the sticky portion of Scotch Tape (masking tape also works well) and your Touchstone should have its sticky mojo back. We here at webOSroundup use this method regularly and can vouch for its effectiveness.
If push comes to shove, spread a small amount of hand soap between your fingers and gently rub the bottom of your Touchstone. Rinse with a few drops of water and pat dry with a paper towel. After air drying some more, you should have an ultra-sticky Touchstone again. Happy charging!

This week we talk some apps, break some balls, and even talk about the upcoming webOS tablet that was officially announced today.

In an all hands meeting last week HP Vice President Todd Bradley was rumored to have talked about the dream so many of us are already salivating for: a webOS-based Tablet coming in Q1, 2011. PreCentral reports tonight that during HP’s Q3 2010 earnings call, in an answer to a question, HP confirmed the release for the rumored tablet. As soon as we can confirm the juicy details we will get them to you. It’s beginning to feel like we will soon all need to grab our surfboards and prepare for the oncoming webOS wave about to hit us with its multitasking goodness. Stay tuned!
Update:
Engadget has confirmed the statement HP was reported to have made in its Q3 2010 earnings call, quoting HP as saying in response to a direct question about about their future in tablets:
“You’ll see us with a Microsoft product out in the near future and a webOS-based product in early 2011″
Hmm. So HP’s Windows 7 slate will debut before the webOS slate. Nevertheless, this is a promising and unlikely development as HP is known for not announcing products until they ship. It truly does showcase not only HP’s apparent unwavering commitment to webOS, but also their hunger to be, with all sorts of upcoming form factors and operating systems (Android, Windows 7, Blackberry, and webOS), a legitimate volume player in the still nascent tablet arena.

What is one thing that has prevented webOS and the Palm Pre from really taking off in the corporate world? The lack of solid document editing support. DocsToGo has teased us several times, only to totally stop working on anything related to webOS.
The lack of any solid Microsoft Office document editing software on webOS very well may change in the near future. If you take a look at Quickoffice’s CEO, Alan Masarek’s blog post from today, you will see some very intriguing language.

Mark Hurd’s sudden ousting from HP has left a highly visible CEO vacancy. The longer the vacancy continues unfilled, the more of an impact this will have on the technology behemoth. Stock prices have fallen, and some analysts have started whispering that the fallout from all of this ballyhoo could put the company in a vulnerable position.
Many speculated HP would have a CEO replacement announced in time for its earnings call today, but it seems that’s not the case. Yesterday, the company made public that they hired head-hunting firm Spencer Stuart to find a suitable candidate. We’re guessing this makes the likelihood of finding another company outsider to run the company more probable.
HP’s last two CEOs, Carly Fiorina and Mark Hurd, were also outsiders. Both of them were kicked out of the company in very public disputes with the executive board.
So now the question remains: who should run the tech giant? Mr. Hurd was credited for slimming down the company — perhaps too much. Rather than a number cruncher, we hope HP seeks out more of a visionary leader in order to make webOS better compete in the mobile space. If hiring a firm is the way to do it, then so be it. But they’d better hurry. The longer the perception of HP being a rudderless company continues, the more damaging this will be.
